The Torrey Pines Falcons held off a late Panther surge to win its CIF Open Division semi-final game. The score was 54-50. The difference in the game was Falcon senior Jake Gilliam, a giant 6-10 center who scored 26 points, almost all of which were 2-point field goals shot at a range of not more than four feet. It's interesting to note that Vista played Mission Hills three times and, despite the Grizzlies' talented 6-10 Warren Washington, they won two of those contests. Washington, I should add, must be at least a 4-star athlete, bound to be recruited by a very high major college (UCLA, Arizona, etc.). Tonight, however, the Panthers had no real answer for Gilliam. They did hold him to 10 points in the second have, though that was partly because Gilliam got into foul trouble and had to sit for several minutes.
The Panther's leading scorer was junior Taurus Samuels, who scored 17 points. All in all, this was a relatively low-scoring basketball game.
Frankly, I think that if the Falcons had not had Gilliam, Vista would have won, perhaps handily. The Panthers, though not especially tall, are quick and have at least four really scary-good shooters. This has been a great season for Vista. They are now 27-4, with at least one more game to be played. As I understand it, all 8 of the open division schools this year will get a spot in the state championship playoffs. (By the way, the Panthers' four losses were by a total of only 18 points!)
Vista is lead by new coach Anthony Bolton. The Panthers look forward to another good season next year.
As for Torrey Pines, don't get the idea that they are a one-man team. They have several very talented players and have earned their 28-4 record. Still, it's obvious that having a very hefty and mobile 6-10 player at the post position is invaluable.
