Bill can you do some math here? We're supposed to raise our payroll, but Bell, Adams and Ludwick will all get raises in Arbitration Our 3 biggest needs are Center Field Shortstop Second Base And I would like to know how much salary we have to sign a player to all positions. My guess is we have about 10 million for next year to sign players in those 3 positions. But it would be nice to get a little more specific. sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101028&content_id=15891180&vkey=news_sd&c_id=sd

Don't forget First base after we trade Adrian. Do you think Gonzo is gone before the season starts or at the trade deadline? I wish we could keep him but realize they just won't. Not can't, but won't. So I'd like to see us get a nice package before the season starts and roll that new team out on the field. I'm torn with waiting till the trade deadline to see if someone jumps and gives us a big package or try to arrange something big in December, at the Winter Meetings.

Per different reports, Adrians agent said it will take a Teixeira type deal. Adrians as good as gone.
If the deal is right, trade him now. If it's not, see who gets desperate at the deadline.
As for free agents.....I won't hold my breath. Expect a signing in the mold of Geoff Blum/Mike Cameron "B" type player.
This team needs more than one impact bat.

His worth will be higher now giving him to a team for a full season than a half of one. Plus it gives the team more time to sign him to an extension. This trade should give us prospects that should be the core of our team for the next 6 or 7 years.

If we trade him....We HAVE to get a stud Center fielder. A guy who can take runs off the board and hit for average and steal 40/50 bags. Hoyer has to do his homework on this trade.
Texas made alright with the Teixera trade
Same with the A's for Holliday.

You would think that is true but often is not. Teams think they have enough or won't be in the hunt at all, when August comes and they "know" they only need one bat to win it all, value increases.

One player who is a possibility is Troy Glaus...Played first for the Braves last season....Always played well against the Pads and will certainly play for much less money than he has made before....He is from here and has family here.

I think I would prefer Nady over him because if Rizzo or Blanks is ready mid season we could trade ludwick if out of contention and move Nady to the outfield

I remember Nady was heavily criticized when he was a Padre for apparently refusing to go out and warm up a pitcher...Something silly like that....He got in the dog house and never recovered.

I think you're confusing players. It was Ben Davis who was critized for not warming up a pitcher. Nady just never became the player we thought he could be here.

Nady is one of the few recent draftees (the last?) to skip the minors all together after getting drafted and went to straight to the majors
