Chuck Long. . . failure as a head coach but squeaky clean as a human being, right Hold on, not so fast! Todays UT brings news that Long did nothing to discipline one of his players who assaulted another, putting the latter out of action for the last few games of the 2008 season. And what was his explanation for doing nothing? He "needed" the perp to protect his QB! Well! For one, I am disappointed in Long. His image as a good guy but mediocre coach perhaps should be modified by replacing the word "good" with "questionable." www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/aug/07/1s7assault21335-d-investigating-attack-injured-sds/?sports/aztecsAzWm

This is a really disturbing and disappointing story.
And it really does tarnish Chuck Long's reputation as a, "Good guy."

My guess is Chuck didn't see the incident and was not made aware of the severity or lack thereof of the incident either until way after the altercation. The severity of the injuries was probably unknown to Chuck also for some period of time after the incident. So how does a coach discipline someone for something he knows very little about and.....after the season is over?

The severity of the injuries was probably unknown to Chuck also for some period of time after the incident. So how does a coach discipline someone for something he knows very little about and.....after the season is over? Well, he could have asked around to see if there were any witnesses. Obviously, there were. He could have asked the victim. Since Sandford was seriously injured, to the point of missing three games, don't you think the H.C. might have been just a little curious about what had happened? Worst of all is his statement of explanation about why he did not suspend the perp. Sounds to me like he pretty much knew what had happened but basically looked the other way. There's no way around it; Chuck Long had an opportunity to show what his values were. Well, I guess he did indeed reveal his values. AzWm

The Lance Louis incident of last Fall has taken a turn for the worse. A major commentary by Tim Sullivan in this morning's UT paints an even grimmer picture, implicating not only Chuck Long but the S.D.S.U. medical staff as well.
This is really a black eye that the Aztecs do not need right now. Is there not a way that Long can be cashiered without pay as a result of his obvious malfeasance in this case?

AzWm Well, I can pretty much guarantee you that Bonnie Dumanis will sweep it under the rug if she can do so - it's just not a "sexy issue". I don't believe this city is anywhere near as corrupt as others, especially those on the Wrong Coast, but there is a Downtown political culture that needs to be smashed. It appears that some of it is crumbling, given that Moores' wife and now Manchester's wife have filed for divorce and that should diminish their power to a certain extent, but with Sanders as Mayor, the Downtown business interests will still wield way too much control. I encourage everyone to read Voice of San Diego: voiceofsandiego.org/It's the best source of news in this City. =Bob

That's assuming that the D.A. does her job. AzWm

That's assuming that the D.A. does her job. AzWm The point is that she doesn't do her job. It's been forever since we've had a DA who has done his or her job and it's because the DA is an elected office and the candidate who kisses the most Downtown business interest ass is the one who'll get elected. So what it comes down to is how much the Downtown business interests are committed to defending SDSU and I suspect that a lot of them are quite invested in that. Besides, prosecuting a college football player for whacking another player upside the head ain't at all "sexy" and it's been my experience that the only thing our DA's office is interested in are sexy cases that will offer them future opportunities for public office. =Bob

IMO, nothing will come to this situation.
Yes, it happened. Why did it happen? I don't know, but it seems very few know.
I feel very bad for the Sandford family. Nobody deserves what happened to Nick.....But...
I don't see any action taken against Chuck Long in any way or his staff. Lance Louis? I doubt it, but maybe.
Move on......Chuck Long is gone. Quit trying to hang the guy.

AzWm If this incident unfolded the way we think, I do not see how there has not been some legal action already. Here is what I think will happen. The father and son will drop the charges on Louis or there will be an out of court settlement (small one). On Chuck Long and Schemmel. I don't think either of them will be ruled as doing anything unethical. (Not that Long didn't be letting Louis play). From what I hear, Long didn't see it. Heard about, but didn't want to suspend Louis. Punished him with telling him he needed to go to anger management. Coaches decision and punishment done. Schemmel asks what type of punishments. Chuck Long tells him. Its over for those 2. Right or wrong, Long addressed as the head coach of the program. Schemmel was satisfied. So it all comes back to the father/son vs Louis.

I for one, feel that it wasn't enough of a punishment. Sanford misses three games due to the punch and kick and Louis gets to play? Somethings wrong with that. I don't think going to anger management classes is a punishment, rather it's a necessity. So to me, no punishment was delivered.
Good to talk to you Steve!!!!!
