What a shock to read the story this morning about Crawford being forced to forfeit the rest of their season. It is sad to see this once proud and powerful program get to such a sad state of affairs. It made me think back to the mid 80's when Crawford was a strong program lead by coaches Chris MIller then Dan Armstrong, now at La Quinta HS. Players like Chris Johnson (SDSU), Ray Thompson, Robert Howard and Chris Townsend (SJSU). The demographics at that school have changed dramatically over the years so I guess it was inevitable but just think about what that program could have been and would be if the athletes in that neighborhood weren't being bussed north of I-8.

Yeah, they didn't even have 11 healthy, eligible players. That's shocking.
The demographics certainly have changed there. They really need to do a better job of introducing American Football to these kids at a younger age. Get them involved in middle school (as a P.E. sport), and maybe find other ways to expose them to American Football.
Waiting until they're in high school isn't going to get kids to try out for the team.

Dan Armstrong is my Uncle.....as a young kid my Mom would take me to Crawford Colts games, I remember the red and blue. Good times. I later played for him at La Quinta. Can someone fill me in, what exactly is their biggest problem?

Do you remember Edwin Garrett? He went to Utah? He played at Crawford in the 80's.......hes a friend of a friend, met him a few years back. He's a cop in San Diego now.

It's a real shame, but it is just another indication of how much California, especially SoCal, has changed over the past half century. There are other high schools in Southern California with similar problems, though having to forfeit games must be fairly rare.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that parts of Southern California now resemble third world countries. I don't mean that derogatorily. It's just that the ethnic and social fabric of many areas are almost totally different from what they were in 1960. That there is a Little Saigon in Orange County - - - Orange County! - - - is one indication of that. And there is a Korea Town in LA, too.
Football may encounter problems, but I'll bet you will find some darned good soccer teams in these minority areas.
Maybe as these kids and their kids become more in tune with American sports culture they will get more involved in the sport.
