Kornheiser on PTI just said the Giants "seemed to be a team made of fishing line and chewing gum, they do have great pitching but not a single bat you're afraid of".....
Obviously, they do have SOME hitting....Posey is a future star but not a guy you really fear yet.
What a stellar job Bochy is doing in San Francisco. Good for him. I always thought he was a fine manager.

I think he has grown as a manager in SF. I think he is better than he use to be. Good for him

That team is perfect for him. Pitching and bullpen, a veteran offense and depth depth depth.

Bochy is a very good manager. I was sorry to see him leave town. Black is also a good manager. They both do well with what they are given.

That team is perfect for him. Pitching and bullpen, a veteran offense and depth depth depth. and a front office that is not afraid of spending $ to win... grats Bochy and the rest.... big middle finger to Moores, Alderson and compay.

"Boch" was too much of a player's manager for me. Give him Gwynn, Caminiti, Finley, Vaughn, and a top notch pitiching staff led by Kevin Brown and he'd win. Who wouldn't?
This year though I think he did a great job with a much different style team of pitching and defense, almost a mirror image of this year's Padres, but which unlike the Padres could finish.
Congrats to Boch. Good to see another ex Padre player manage a World Series winner. AFAIK Cito Gaston is the only other one.

A team with little real talent and a lower payroll than the other three NL West teams. Baseball is one sport where the coach/manager has the least impact, compared to say football, or hoops. But I feel his teams always played hard for him. I am thrilled for Boch, even if it is a division rival.

JYP and Nutz-N-Boltz are eating crow tonight.
Neither cared much for Bochy.
He's not the best manager in the world, but I felt he deserved better after his time here than "hey, if you want to go interview elsewhere, we wont stop you".
But hey...its a business.

That's more an indication of how sorry the division was. What about the 5 seasons before Petco, three of which were last place and the other two 4th out of 5 teams? This year's Padres won more games than any Bochy team not featuring Gwynn, Caminiti, and Finley. Nice to see him win it, and he's probably improved a great deal as a manager over the years.

4. Bruce Bochy. He's one of baseball's best managers. It's interesting that he was eased out when Sandy Alderson was in charge in San Diego (though Bud Black made an excellent replacement), but Bochy's handling of the 'pen, both in San Diego and in San Francisco, is legendary and goes counter to the trend to seek a compliant manager who does whatever the GM tells him to do. The main thing that Bochy has in SF that Black doesn't have in San Diego is good fans. If we reverse the fans I bet the Padres would be the NL West Champ. Playing in a full park that is rocking gives you a much better chance to win games.

Playing in a full park that is rocking gives you a much better chance to win games. That's one of the dumbest comments you have ever typed on this board, with all due respect. Tampa Bay was 22nd this year in attendance. Texas was 14th. Both teams won their divisions. TB made the Series two years ago, with equally awful attendance. The Padres averaged 30,000-32,000 the first 4-5 years in Petco. Attendance started to dip during the 2009 debacle. To say "the main thing" is ridiculous. Maybe one advantage would have been better wording. SF won the division because they have three great starters, and at least a semblance of an offense. We lost because a couple of our starters fell off a cliff, and we couldn't hit at all for stretches of the season.

No, he's not regarded as one of the "best" managers, but... I'm not eating crow because I'm damn happy for the guy. Who doesn't like Boch and "Flan"? Do you remember much about Boch the player? I was there the night he had the only stolen base of his career. But something even more newsworthy involving another Padre occured in that game. Anyone know?
