Steele absolutely loves our defense, which he ranks as #14 in the country. Considering all the talent we have, that could end up being about right. As do I. Could be a big year on that side of the ball. Agree, our D should be pretty good as long as we can find a new "Munson" to emerge this year from the LB crew. Right now we're very inexperienced there. Fely staying healthy would be a huge bonus.
Plus, need the O to move the ball so the D isn't on the field very often after short rests.
If our O can avoid the TO's, have a few sustainable drives, and get Pumphrey into open field on occasion our D will keep us in every game. Really excited to see what Heywood can do this year, backed by an experienced secondary.
Should be fun!

Sorry Andre... #58 is Washington and #57 is South Carolina. That makes 29 P5s we're ahead of.

Sorry Andre... #58 is Washington and #57 is South Carolina. At this point in time any theory as to rankings is as good as the next. So not surprised by some of the lower rankings, although I do believe Florida & Texas were ranked lower than I would have thought.
But SC at #57 - WAY too low, and UW at #58 - WAY too high.
My guess is SDSU falls somewhere around 50.

Ball St. at #55 is way too high. Am I supposed to believe they are better off than Texas?

Ball State went just 5-7 last year but their worst loss was by just 14 points and they return a whopping 18 starters. I bet they upset Northwestern.

It's kinda funny to see some Aztec fans perceptions regarding pre-season rankings. Too many of you are making these things mean way more than they should for the preseason. These rankings are not based on who could beat whom in a given week based on these rankings ... rather they are based on who will play whom this year and their prospects for wins and losses based on their actual schedules.
Perception cuts both ways ... folks ignore the fact that some traditionally strong teams are all facing some formidable setbacks this year (New coaches, loss of key skill position players or a high turnover) which contribute to their downgrade -- throw in a tough SoS and strong conference RPI and you have the recipe for a lower ranking than perception would "allow" you to believe. In a similar manner, consistency of coaching, retention of key skill positions, a low turnover as well as moderate SoS & weak conference RPI can all favor a team resulting in a higher ranking than perception would deem "realistic" for some fans.
So, is Ball St better than Texas, Florida or Virginia Tech? Who knows ... Ball St will probably win more games than Texas -- their stats will more than likely end up better than Florida's and they could very well make a bowl game while Va Tech stays home. These pre-season rankings are just a barometer for the potential finish of a team relative to their schedule and their conference, let's not blow things out of proportion.

To me, those are the only numbers that matter.

Just to clarify, Steele predicts that at the end of the season we will receive the 38th most votes in the polls. In contrast, his computers say we will have the 49th best team.
