I was reading thru the game thread (New Mexico) on another Aztec Board. Game Threads are always real emotional and in the heat of the game. I understand that. I was very surprised and actually shocked by some Aztec fans comments toward one of our own Tyrone Shelley. At one point, 4 different posters slamming Tyrone on 4 consecutive posts. About being lazy, and not hustling, not playing team ball.....pretty much everything, but with the central point being lazy and not hustling. They seemed to focus on a play that Shelley didn't seem to go get a rebound and someone else got the ball. On that play I saw one other Aztec that was closer to the ball than Shelley and didn't go get the ball. No comment from the fans on that Aztec player. On another play, the Aztec fans followed (Followers : the words of a color announcer who said Shelley was to busy celebrating his 3 pointer and didn't get back on D and was burned. I watched that play closely. Tyrone hit the 3 (hell yes he was excited) and yes he did celebrate a little which I also do not like... But to be fair, Shelley got back in plenty of time to get in Defensive position on his man. He THEN played bad defense and got beat on the play. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was excited about his 3 pointer. I don't understand why a bunch of Aztec fans would single out one player and try to run him into the ground. As it turns out, Tyrones foot was really hurting him and THAT is why he was beat to the loose ball (that another Aztec should have got). Shelley had a shot in his foot at halftime to enable him to continue playing in the second half. As for some Aztec fans? No comment from those who dislike Shelley admitting their mistake. No comments on WHY Shelley may have been out hustled and no mention of the shot he took at half time JUST to be able to continue to play. Damn.....critique and complain, but at least be somewhat fair about it. Go Aztecs!!!!

I think what's happening Steve is that Tyrone just doesn't look "in the flow" yet with his teammates. I have seen him play some great "D" in some games... steal the ball, harass the shooter etc. But he does jack up some ill conceived shots at times....the air balls from 3 look especially bad when he has shot them. I think he has great potential to help the team more, I just don't think he is in the flow yet.....seems like he is on an island at times.

I agree with all of that UWAztec.
No doubt that Tyrone has lost his confidence and is struggling. I was talking to a friend of mine at the game the other night and he brought up a great point.
It almost looks like Fisher and staff have used the military technique on Tyrone to tear him completely down and then build him the way they want him. I don't think that is such a bad thing.
If Tyrone can handle all of this, it will make him better in the long run. I think he will be back and I think he is putting out the effort.
My main point is that we, as Aztec fans don't need to make up things to make him look even worse.
Critique, but at least be honest on the critique.
***Key point here that all of us should be very excited about. Tyrone is one of our best scorers (potentially) and is playing horrible.......And we are still winning at an Aztec record pace.
Can you imagine when he comes around?

Yea.....well. A majority of those posters ..it seems, have never played sports and don't see the whole floor. What did you think about Shelton chasing Martinez around through those picks the other night?? Pretty amazing I thought.

I was shocked on Shelton.
I have noticed this year and last that Shelton is much quicker in the open court than I thought he would be. Sort of how I was amazed that Mo Camara used to play the top spot on our press and how agile he was in open court.
Shelton is nothing short of amazing....especially with his knee problems. You talk about a leader. Wow

I think if Billy was playing and Tyrone was playing well, that Fisher would probably play Shelton about 5 minutes on Wyoming if we had a good handle on the game.
I think with Billy out and Tyrone not playing well/hurting that Shelton will have to play about 15-20 (unless we take an big early lead).
I would love to see him rest, but I don't think Fisher can afford to rest him right now.

I would like our chances for NCAA and winning a game or 2..

And one other thing....Kawhi will be much better at the end than he is now. Lets hope it does. ***PS....The thread over there I was talking about.....What surprised me was the a couple of guys making the Shelley comments know the game pretty well. There is no doubt that Tyrone has that rap.......And there is no doubt he needs to improve in those areas. -At the same time, he is attempting in those areas. -He has showed signs of progress in those areas. -He is injured at the time (and needed a shot to continue playing in the second half). I am always aware (and dogged by some) of "personal agendas". They piss me off. They (personal agendas) exist and all I am asking is for Aztec fans to be "at least" fair to their own.

With Billy out we need Shelley now more than ever. I think we suited up only 10 for the NMU games, and one of those was White.
Seems to me that we are down to 9 healthy, and eligible, players. Horton is gone and Deutchman, someone told me, is hurt. Furthermore, Shelton is fragile and we have not seen much of Williams.
Here is the roster, with the eligible and healthy players highlighted. Let's hope no one else goes down.
5 Brian Carlwell JR C 6-11 297 Maywood, Ill./Univ. of Illinois 42 Mehdi Cheriet SR F 6-9 218 Tarare, France/Arizona Western College 40 Kelvin Davis SR G 6-3 220 Waterbury, Conn./College of Southern Idaho 20 Jason Deutchman JR G 6-6 220 Los Angeles, Calif./Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 23 D.J. Yes William and Shelley had to have a shot to play that second half.
Horton is gone, which hurts a little. It would have been very nice to have Horton around to chase a point guard in Wyoming a little.
Alec will have to play. As I said before, I am very anxious to see how much time he gets and how he performs.
We need to stay very healthy.......at least until Billy White gets back.
Man, it is a good thing we are so deep, or we would be about 10-5 right now, instead of 12-3.

And the bashing of one of our own.....Tyrone Shelley continues on another board.
There is no doubt that Tyrone is not playing well. He would be the first to tell you that.
There is no doubt that Tyrones confidence on offense is shot (at this time.....he will be back on offense).
Give the guy a break. He is an Aztec that is playing his butt off and playing in a role that he is very unaccustomed to.
Aztec fans.....Do not treat one of your own this way.

Yes...the worst was the one about Kelvin Davis after the Wyoming loss I think? Some jerk/loser posted a horrible thread title about Kelvin. Thankfully it got pulled after a few hours I believe. Some of these posters have probably never accomplished anything in their lives...and they go and post "he sucks" about a guy who beat cancer and came back to play Division 1 basketball!!

Yes UW....Just crazy to slam Aztecs like that. Be critical....yes......Dispute plays....yes..... Degrade Aztec players who are giving it their all on a public board? No.
