Last night's game seemed to bring to a head what I have seen almost this entire season with Winston. It seems he has lost total confidence in his game. Just some of the mistakes and mental lapses I have noticed for quite some time with him...I just have to wonder if there is something deeper going on with the kid. He's had moments of incredible brilliance this season !! And when he is "on", the guy can literally carry the Aztecs team !! I have also noticed that when he is playing in his "A-game", he makes everyone around him want to play better, too ! Fellow Aztec teammates seem to follow Shep's lead. But for whatever reason(s), I have just noticed an overall lack of confidence in his game this season. I don't know if he is trying too hard...just forcing things...not making good decisions because of total frustration...you can see the anguish of everything on his face and body language. It is so easy to say, "Shep, just relax...let the game come to you...don't try to think too much...just let it happen, dude...." But I think its sometimes common with all of us, once we start hitting the bad skids in life, sometimes the harder we try to pull out of it, the more we tend to sometimes slip deeper into the proverbial rabbit's hole. I know Coach Fish and his entire staff are very supportive of the players. And I am also sure that Fish and his staff of coaches have all reached out to Shep over this season, to talk...maybe crack some jokes...open up and air it out and let the tension and feelings start to flow out-sorta thing. I am hoping that Shep suddenly breaks loose of whatever might be getting him down, and puts together a run of an AMAZING STRING of games in the tourney and Madness - - and carries the Aztecs to some upcoming INCREDIBLE VICTORIES ! The kind that has the talking heads on ESPN going, "Wow ! That SDSU kid has suddenly become on FIRE !" Winston has got it in him ! Everyone knows that...we all do...Coach Fish does...and most importantly, Shep does. He was an incredibly highly-touted high school recruit for a reason ! The dude has an amazing game. If there was EVER a time to "awaken a game", I TRULY hope Winston Shepard suddenly emerges like the phoenix and lights the dark night time sky with an amazing fireworks display !

Shepard had 4 assists and only 2 turnovers. He had 8 rebounds. Instead of taking it in by himself, he passed to Trey Kell for an easy layup at the end of the game. He made a clutch three near the end, and both of his free throws in crunch time.
Yes, he shot poorly overall and didn't finish plays, but he was much more positive than negative in the UNLV game. He was practically the ONLY guy who delivered anything of value (outside of some first half minutes of JJ O'Brien) in the Boise game.
This damning with faint praise and crocodile tears "hoping" is quite amusing. There is ZERO evidence that he's lost confidence or hit the skids.

He made two three's last night in addition to making a great pass on the fast break to give us the lead with about 90 seconds left. He also made some key boards.
He's never, ever been a scorer for anyone at any level before coming here. We should stop expecting him to transform into one here. He's an elite defender who can rebound.

10 Points 8 Rebounds (Team High) 4 Assists (Team High) Hits the biggest shot in the game to silence the T-Mac Hits 2 clutch free throws with time winding down to secure an Aztec win. But he has lost his confidence? What planet do you live on? Please see my signature.

Yes, he missed some layups on some great feeds from JJ. But he made 5 huge plays down the stretch. He made the three that gave us the lead back and never lost, he made the steal that led to a bucket, he made a fine pass on the 2 on 1 break, he made two free throws when we were up two and he rebounded the ft miss with 1 second left. All told, a really good effort from Winston.

As frustrating as WS can be at times when within 2-3 feet of the rim, the guy has played very well overall this year & he fills the stat-line in other areas. He still nearly had a double-double (10 & 8), and led the team in assists. He's been in double figures 6 of the last 7, averaging 14+, which I believe leads the team over that stretch. In 4 of those games he averaged 18+.
I think WS's biggest hurdle is the high expectations, both of himself and from the fans. We all expect him to go off for 20 a night, and slam all those inside shots. Maybe eventually he'll do that, but at this point he is what he is - a very good defender with length, who is a vocal leader on the team, a strong rebounder & a scorer who may not have best touch or the strongest finishes, but still puts points on the board & fills the stat sheet. I'll take it.

Concur WS is a guy that can do a wide variety of things well defend , pass , rebound , draw fouls , and score about 10 points a game but may not be the prolific scorer some think he should be . Great player that I am very happy that chose SDSU . Now is crunch time as we battle for a MW championship . Then MW T champs and on to MM . His contributions are going to be very important to see how far we can advance .
As noted ,in the last minutes , when the game was on the line, he made two clutch free throws , had a very unselfish pass/assist to TK , and key rebound to ice the game .

If I had Winston's ear, I would make some suggestions.
1. Winston please don't shoot those 2 point jump shots. You are only shooting 29% on 2 point jump shots and will never get fouled when taking that type of shot. It is a very low efficiency shot.
2. Don't attempt a 3 unless the ball comes to you from inside and you are open. Every 3 you have made this season has had an assist. You are a good 3 point shooter in a catch and shoot situation. Be a catch and shoot shooter.
3. If you are alone underneath with a known shot blocker, defer unless you can get him off his feet.
4. Keep doing everything else.

The great thing about Winston... in my opinion:
His emotions are... what they are. There is no arrogance, there is no sullen defeatism. When he makes a great play... he celebrates. It is pure unbridled enthusiasm (think Billy Mumphrey).
I love his demeanor and hope he never changes.

He's killing it on the D-end, as are all of them.
I won't pretend to know what our O concept is, so I won't comment on what he should or shouldn't do when we're looking to fill the bucket.
But I do know how to shoot FTs, and would leave any of the Aztec scholarship players behind in the dust in a contest. So I feel pretty comfortable saying Shep's gotta cut down his time getting set up to shoot a free throw in half. Guys lining up 30 footers to win The Masters at Augusta don't take that much time. Open-heart surgeons don't take that much time bypassing clogged arteries.
Toes on the line. Shoulders squared. Deep breath. Aim dead center just over the lip of the rim. Let it go with a Ducks Head release. Payday. Shouldn't take more than 5 seconds.
It's a free throw, not a scientific study.

Spin the ball, take one bounce, and up and through. Taking a second to take a deep breath and calm yourself before a big free throw is a good thing. Have you ever attempted a free throw as important as the one(s) Winston nailed last night?
