The current naming rights deal with Vejas ends in 2019/2020 (not sure of the exact date), which gives the school an opportunity to honor Fisher right around the time he us due to retire. Now I'm not naive enough to think the school will pass up a major pay day (last deal was $6.9 mil) to do this. So my thought is what if us alumni/fans crowd fund it? Sites like fundanything.com and kickstarter.com have been able to raise millions if dollars for various projects through private and personel donations, so what if we used this as a tool to buy the naming rights for SDSU's arena?
I get that $6.9 mil is a huge number, but all we need is momentum. If we can get it going and start to get it some exposure then two things can potentially happen 1.We may be able to attract major donors to the cause (Jacobs, Fowler, ext.) And 2. We may be able to get the school to give us a discount in exchange for the amazing PR it will bring.
We always talk on here what the school should and should not do. Well on an issue as important as this we need to take matters into our own hands!
If people are interested I am willing to set up the account but I lack both the time and connections to really get the fund raising effort going in an effective manner. Let me know your thoughts.

Naming rights will go to a company. The floor will be permanently named Steve Fisher Court once he retires.

Money for the AD department is going to be needed as more P5 rules go into affect . FB team does have its last money game Penn state in 2015 then do not see another money game , So it could be very difficult to turn down the money for naming rights .

The flaw in your plan is that arena naming rights deals have end dates - hence cox arena turned into Viejas arena. So to come up with a bunch of money to name it after Steve fisher under a temporary contract would be a disservice to his legacy. The floor will and should be named for him ... And potentially a statue outside the arena.

I am hoping that the court is renamed for Coach Fisher long before he retires. As far as respecting him, I now place Coach Fisher right up there next to Don Coryell. I never thought any one connected with SDSU would come close to matching Coryell. Steve Fisher has. I accept your apology.

The Jacobs, Fowler, Altman's, etc. have already bought into major donations.
The naming rights SHOULD go to a corporation. If random members of the fan base are capable of putting together a donation of $1MM per year around a certain cause we should be doing that in MANY other areas anyway, primarily scholarships. Especially now with full cost of tuition on the table. THAT should be the primary focus.
There are lots of areas which can be named after Fisher, including the court or a plaque heading towards the locker rooms, etc. And "we're here at Fisher court, Viejas Arena" is perfectly fine.
The athletic department needs to maximize donations - there should never be any discounts because one name sounds better than another.

Nice thought/sentiment, but horrible idea. It will be more than $6.9 mil next time, let's say it's $9 mil. If you can raise $9 mil from boosters-fans-alums, you don't use it to name an arena that a company will pay you to name. In our cash strapped program, that money would/should go to ANYTHING else. The floor will named after he and Angie, and hopefully a statue of him somewhere prominent.

The court should have had his signature on it a few years ago, but it's hard to pass up $10M+ for a cash-strapped CSU (and I think Fisher would be first to agree).

In an ideal world it would permanently become Steve Fisher Arena as soon as the current naming rights deal runs out.
Unfortunately, this is D1 College athletics. Hardly an ideal world.
Steve Fisher Court may be all we can reasonably expect. And that should happen this offseason. No need to wait for his retirement.

I agree there are a lot better, permanent ways to honor Steve than what are essentially expensive temporary naming rights (e.g. Fisher Court, statue ..). Personally, I hope the Viejas Band steps up for another term. The name Viejas has developed a national cache that opponents have learned to fear. Hosting NCAA tournament games spreads the name throughout big time, travelling college basketball circles. That name recognition should help with basketball visitors and other tourists wanting to hit the casino. Win-Win. .... Oh, and uhh, cut down the nets.
