I do agree 100% though... Malik needs to be on the court more. Even given his defensive deficiencies... he rebounds strong and his shot-blocking ability make up for it.

I like the guy but that's a little deceptive considering how much playing time he gets. Malik and WS3 have near identical fg% but Pope has been significantly better from 3. If you take Pope's numbers at Winston's minutes he'd have more rebounds, steals, blocks, and points per game. The same could be said for Allen with the exception of rebounds. So yeah, Winston is good and he's a key player on the team... but he's already replaceable with guys who are younger. You can't just do that though, there are extenuating circumstances. Pope looks super promising, but he has had so few minutes that his one great game is really skewing his numbers. Also, generally speaking, it's one thing to get numbers against the other team's 1st string... as opposed to getting numbers against the 2nd stringers. Simple statistics never tell the whole story. With Shep, you take the good with the bad. A concept I never fully appreciated with Jamaal until now.

His D is why he isn't getting more PT. He just looks lost at times. So chalk that up to inexperience as we should see him make great strides into next year. Rebounding is decent, but if he would just put his hands up more and try for them, he could get more. Too many balls barely pass his head with his hands down.

WS111 jump shot reminds me of unfolding an origami figure, it has a lot of parts, and all must work correctly for his shot to be successful. Did I dream this but did two of his turnovers go into the stands? The other turn over in the first half caused an Aztec run to stop, and it caused the crowd's enthusiasm and cheers to become silent. It was that lazy cross court pass to AQ that was intercepted by Fresno for an easy layup. This after we took a six point lead and had just turned them over and the Show was starting to get real loud, as only they can. In contrast I thought he played real good defense on Harris when he was guarding him, Harris didn't get many open looks or easy drives to the basket like he did the last game. No you weren't asleep "dreaming", you were wide awake... He did have 2 passes sail into the stands. Those were "better" than his other 4 turnovers to some extent. - one if those 4 was traveling as he was making a strong spin move to the hoop (watch reply in dvr slo mo, was def traveling). The other 3 were brutal, as 2 led to breakaway FSU dunks, the 3rd to a breakaway where the guy was fouled going to the basket, and he made both free throws. Those were 6 fast, easy FresNO buckets when they were very much struggling to score. Things worked out OK, as we got the W. As I posted earlier- Winston scored 11 last night, but FSU scored 10 points off HIS 6 turnovers. Not a good "taketh and giveth away" game for WS. We escaped without another L to FSU, but those many TOs and those type of TOs have happened a lot, and will likely cost a win any time we are playing a tough team the rest of the season. For the 101st time, boy do we miss X

I almost started another thread on this, titled "Winston's Shooting Form", but I figure I'd get lambasted by some for excessive threads criticizing him. I posted the following under Ernie's Photos from the FSU game, but it seems not many look at that thread One of the photos has a great shot if Winston shooting a jumper- here's what I noticed. Interesting photo capturing Shep shooting a jumper. Ball is way back in his palm, his left/guide hand is completely off the ball. His guide hand should still be on the ball at that point, which leads to a more consistent, repeatable and accurate release. Also, he is essentially shooting one handed jumpers, with the other hand in the vicinity but not still on the ball or at least in contact with his shooting hand. I would love to see additional frame advance photos to see if the ball comes off his fingertips or stays in the palm as he releases. Fingertips good, Palm not good. Either of these can lead to not bring accurate, if both, well ... You shoot about how Winston does, not very accurately. The Coaches have to analyze and work on this stuff, right? Yes. Spot on. And it's been obvious since day one. Shep's shooting form has way too many moving parts. Not fluid at all. He looks like a construction crane every time he shoots -- all herky jerky. I have no idea why this hasn't been fixed. Every single coach and scout has said since day one (as have I, FWIW) that his game would be deadly if he were able to develop a mid-range jumper and even a bit of an outside shot (at least 35% from behind the arc is all we ask; doesn't even have to be a scorching stat, mediocre would do just fine.) But for whatever reason, he just can't seem to make it click. He unveiled a really nice move about halfway through last season, where he pulls up from about 10 or 15 feet, jumps way above the crowd and releases a jumper. Throws the D off every time. It's virtually unstoppable. And the play always looks fantastic until he starts cocking his shooting arm. Then it looks terrible. Sometimes the ball goes in. Sometimes not. If he could hit that shot even 60% of the time, the guys on D would really have no idea what to do with him. Guard the lane and prepare for a drive or guard the pull-up J? Having said all that, I don't want to bag on Shep. He still remains a force on the court and we're fortunate to have him. It's just that he'd likely be MGC POY if he could develop a reliable jump shot and pure shooting form. And having said all that, Kawhi's shooting form was hideous while he was at State. But as soon as he declared for the NBA draft, he worked 24/7 with a shooting coach. He now has a reliable outside game to go with his relentless inside game, and the results are there for everyone to see. I was hoping that Shep would make the same leap with his shooting over the summer as KL did. Maybe next year. Yeah, my original post was focused strictly on Ernie's photo of WS's jumper pre release, and the things I noted that seen problematic. That pic is literally worth several thousand words. But also true are all the moving parts of his jump shot form, the elbow out, the fading and leaning every which way. It all feels like he's trying to look smooth or showy, vs the boring kid that shoots with the exactly same form and release every time, the guys like a Johnny Dee, or that Gonzaga always seems to have in abundance. If Shep could ever just simplify his form and release and be consistent with proper form ... Watch out. Were all waiting, I'm hoping, but I'm not holding my breath.

Allen has played 21 games, same as Winston. Playing more could go both ways. They may play against better competition and their numbers would fall. Or their numbers could improve with experience. I tend to think the latter is likely but that wasn't really my point. I was simply pointing out that WS3 stats/ranks can be attributed more to volume than superior talent. There is little to no drop off to the next guys.

Winston is also more of a primary option on offence, and increased volume tends to lead to decreased efficiency, it's not just about better competition.

If you take away the CSU game (I know I know you cant just do that blah blah blah) Malik has scored 42 points in 158 minutes, or 10.6 points per 40 minutes, shooting 30% from the field, and 28% from 29% from 3. He would have 7.3 boards per 40, and 1.5 assists. This is what I mean by one game really skewing his numbers. Disclaimer: Malik Pope will be a stud and I am incredibly hyped about him, I'm just sick of how undervalued Shepard is.

"Per 40" stats don't illustrate the impact of getting into a rhythm.

He frustrates the hell out of me at times but people tend to overlook the good as well. He carried us the first 5 minutes yesterday and played terrific D.

He is tremendous on D. Just like Spencer. We need line changes to insert Pope and Chol for offensive purposes only.
When will Winston realize that Eurostep works when the defender doesn't know it's coming? Try another move. Also, don't give it away, you're about to do it. The dude gets the same results I do when I do it. And I suck.

Started off tonight with a nice looking jumper and has taken some shots with balance that have not gone in but forced a few shots. But what is killing hm is the turnovers. He must have had 4 turnovers. This has to stop.
Hope the second half he lets this stuff in the locker room and plays like he can. Just looks like he is trying too hard and/or thinking too much.

I absolutely love his defense and rebounding but other than the 2nd half of the NM game, his shooting, passing and dribbling have really been pathetic given his experience and theoretical potential. It's a shame because he seems like such a hard worker and good kid and teammate. I root for him but hate watching him with the ball.

He's got to be as frustrated as everyone else, don't you think?
At least he's not quitting.

Shepard is a real asset overall. He plays great defense and works hard. Where he hurts us is his lazy turnovers and bad shot selection at times. The most frustrating thing however is his drives to the hoop. If he would just go up hard and dunk instead of always trying to finger roll he would make a lot more baskets and be shooting a lot of free throws. He has an NBA body and athletic ability but on offense plays a lot smaller.

it is so dam# frustrating watching his offensive play. signs of what could be, then signs of a big tall skinny 9 year old. against usu, an air ball finger roll? you gots to wonder if he's afraid to get fouled or worries about a charge. there's no hard drive to the basket. I've been hoping each game that he comes out of whatever alternate universe he goes to and lets all that talent come out. he does once in awhile and we get excited, then back to lala land. maybe it's time for pope to start and have ws come off the bench. he needs some kind of a wake up call. come on ws, we are all waiting. get your o on the same page as your d and rebounding.
