This is not a moral victory post. SDSU Hoops is past the "Moral Victory" level and the team will echo that but Arizona is a college hoops Blue Blood. Their entire roster is full of Top 50 players. SDSU gave them everything they could handle and if we make more free throws SDSU wins.
SDSU is starting to recruit almost at an elite level. Look at the last 2 classes. At one point last night SDSU had a Top 100 recruit at every position on the floor. ( Pope, Chol, Kell, Shepard & Polee ) 10 years ago we could only dream of a line up like that.
SDSU Hoops went from dead to respectable to a regular in the Top 25 and now we are witnessing the transition to elite. Coach Fisher and crew have done a miraculous job with The SDSU Mens Basketball program. Even though there are bumps along the way enjoy the ride.
You think they are good now? Just wait until Kell, Pope, and Zabo are Juniors with a couple of elite underclassmen playing with them.
Yes losing sucks but SDSU is better than 340 other D1 Men's Hoops teams.
On this Thanksgiving be Thankful for SDSU finally having a Nationally respected Men's Basketball team that's becoming a National Power.

We are elite now. Arizona has a psychological edge for the moment, that is about 2 points. Our team has a goal and that is to meet Arizona again in the tournament and overcome them. That is completely realistic. This team has a lot of depth, more than any before it at our beloved Mesa! We are really good this year.

Yes, Az. is an elite program and have top ten recruiting. The difference last night was foul shooting, rebounding and their 5 star player, notice I said player not players played like a 5 star recruit. Just like last year in the Sweat Sixteen their 5 star player(Gordon) played like NBA draft pick and was the difference in the game.
Our highest rated recruit out of high school played their best player. Our guy made more mistakes, missed key free throws, a tough jumper and had a crucial turnover in the last five minutes. I saw that as the key to winning the game.
When we had them in foul trouble in the 1st half we didn't force the issue enough by taking the ball to the hoop.

So much of sports is mental ( reference our "winning when ahead at the 5 minute mark" record). Our team has been so close to winning vs AZ each time. . Yet don't. I don't want ti say they don't believe they will win (!), but maybe at this point. . AZ believes more strongly that it will put it out in the end.

This is not a moral victory post. Of course it's not. You could win a million dollars in the lottery and you'd start a thread complaining about the taxes. So we had a chance to knock off the #3 team in the country and some poor (FT) shooting and decisions likely cost us the game; but it's November, not March, and all it proves is that we're even better than the 15th best team in the nation while trending upward. It's Thanksgiving ... for one day at least, look at how lucky we are to have this beautiful university (fantastic home court and advantage and first class practice facility on the rise), a Hall of Fame coach (and person) leading our team and a boatload of talent.

No, we are not elite. YET.
We are darned close, though, and we have an elite head coach.

We are very, very, very close. Close enough that this thread may be OBE by the end of the year.
We've won at Kansas and at Gonzaga in recent years. We won at Arizona not too long ago.
I wouldn't say we are not elite based on this 1 game, a 2 point loss to the #3 team.
We will be elite when we go farther in MM and start getting some Final 4 runs and/or a National Championship.
We've had some tough matches in the Sweet 16. UCONN went on to Championship and AZ has our number right now.

This did not look like a game with one clearly superior team winning. It looked like two pretty evenly matched teams, with one overcoming an early handicap (early foul trouble) and the other unable to overcome what has been a problem for too long (terrible foul shooting).
I'm willing to acknowledge that Arizona, overall, is the better team right now. But not by much. Coming from several points behind with just seconds to go to lose by only two showed that the Aztecs do not give up. A loss is a loss, but look what happened to North Carolina yesterday. Falling by two to the #3 team in the country is no disgrace.
What would be a disgrace, in my view, would be failure to address the free throw problem. A comprehensive view of the team does tell me that they will be tough to beat as the younger players gain experience. (But a couple of the veterans did not look so good, which I must say is troubling. They are the ones who are supposed to lead the way in crucial games.)

With all of our new parts this year, who really thought we would be knocking on the door of the Top Ten at this point? We will only get better this year. Especially when everyone is healthy -- we can definitely challenge for the Final Four this season.

My memory may be failing me, but I seem to recall that the Aztecs have not been particularly good at free throw shooting a number of times in recent years. AzWm

There are quite a few reasons we lost, FT shooting was one of them. I agree with the overall sentiment of the OP. We are really good in basketball but have a ceiling this year, that could change in a couple of seasons.

Arizona is a very good team , it has a very good coach , and they recruit very well , on the west and even nationally . Stanley Johnson was rated #3 and he showed why last night all over the court(one and done) . They also have 4 guys that could be in the NBA soon . As so often happens in tight games if you have an all star clutch player they step up and make things happen to get the W for their team . We do not have a clutch player that can do that now. Arizona is an elite top 5 team , we are a good top 20 team . they also have another top 5 recruiting class coming in 2015 , plus transfer Anderson . they also signed Leaf for 2016 . We have a couple other strong tests AT Washington and At CINCY . Need to win at least one game maybe two to get a good seed for MM . Both teams that played last night should get better. We play in the MW - a weak conference . We are expected to win all home game and not more then 2 or 3 road games. Arizona plays Gonzaga and Michigan at home , OOC road games at UTEP and at UNLV. Then a very difficult PAC schedule , where most expect them to lose some road games. only time will tell who develops more as a unit .

I think at the end of this season, we will all believe our team is an elite team. We have an incredibly good team this year.
