the play where he steals the ball from the kid who intercepted the pass and then returns it for a touchdown is a gem.

My son plays with the son of Mike Haynes (NFL HOFer). He has a similar highlight reel. If I remember correctly, Mike's son did the strip ball run for touchdown move last year. There's usually one kid on every team that stands out. Especially against weak competition. Mike's son is probably not as fast as Pumphery, but he's shiftier. youth football is so fun to watch...At least when we are winning. Mike Haynes older son is at Cathedral Catholic. Will likely start at Qb next year for varsity. Maybe someone the Aztecs need to take a look at. Kid has an arm and speed. Not sure what his prospects are but he looked like D1 talent to me.

These are fantastic clips. Pump was born with a lot of talent. Kinda what coach said after the Hawaii game. Press asked Pump how he did it and Pump said something about seeing open green and ran to it. Coach cut in and said something like... the great ones don't know how they do it, they just do it. These highlights reinforce coach's comment. Thanks for the post.

An underrated aspect of great running backs is spacial intelligence. The term "vision" is used but rarely understood for what it is, SI. A good and experienced running back is like a good and experienced chess player. He doesn't really have to think about moves but just "sees" them. That is why chess masters can play 40 games at once and win an impressive number of those games.

Azstat- I was about to scold you for having the audacity to compare Pumphrey to Faulk, but those are some crazy similar stats. I watched the DVR of the Hawaii game last night and saw the Faulk/Pumphrey stats they showed. They showed yards through 19 games. That is the worst method to compare the two since Pumphrey was the backup to Muema last season and already has more carries this year than last year. I wish they would either use per carry stats or only stats for this year with maybe a projection yards - like below: Att Yrds Avg TDs263 1573 6.0 21.3 Faulk's average season (Adjusted to 12 games/season) 247 1695 6.9 20.5 Pumphrey 2014 projection (12 games, although he will play 13) 305 1842 6.0 23 George Jones 1995 (12 games) 242 1414 5.8 16 Ronnie Hillman 2010 (adjusted to 12 games) 287 1579 5.5 18 Ronnie Hillman 2011 (adjusted to 12 games) 219 1345 6.2 15 Adam Muema 2012 (adjusted to 12 games) 236 1148 4.9 14 Adam Muema 2013 (adjusted to 12 games) 339 1690 5.0 16 Larry Ned 2001 (adjusted to 12 games) With 13 games Pumphrey is on pace for 1,836 yards. The Aztecs record is 1,842 by George Jones.

A list of all Aztecs runners with at least 1,000 yards. Pumphrey is moving up the all time list. He will likely end the year #7 between George Jones and Wayne Pittman. At this point he has the highest career Yards per carry at 6.5 Rk | Player | Att | Yds | Avg | TD | 1 | Marshall Faulk | 766 | 4589 | 6.0 | 57 | 2 | Larry Ned | 765 | 3562 | 4.7 | 36 | 3 | Ronnie Hillman* | 573 | 3243 | 5.7 | 36 | 4 | Adam Muema* | 535 | 2955 | 5.5 | 34 | 5 | Jonas Lewis | 588 | 2842 | 4.8 | 15 | 6 | George Jones | 486 | 2810 | 5.8 | 34 | 7 | Wayne Pittman | 551 | 2363 | 4.3 | 17 | 8 | Chris Hardy | 447 | 2341 | 5.2 | 22 | 9 | David Turner | 433 | 2234 | 5.2 | 20 | 10 | Paul Hewitt | 473 | 2056 | 4.3 | 28 | 11 | Lynell Hamilton | 480 | 2052 | 4.3 | 14 | 12 | Walter Kazee* | 388 | 1852 | 4.8 | 17 | 13 | Donnel Pumphrey* | 269 | 1741 | 6.5 | 20 | 14 | Brandon Bornes | 375 | 1553 | 4.1 | 13 | 15 | Atiyyah Henderson | 338 | 1437 | 4.3 | 6 | 16 | Kevin OConnell | 395 | 1312 | 3.3 | 19 | 17 | Mike Waters | 312 | 1266 | 4.1 | 5 | 18 | Monty Reedy | 264 | 1231 | 4.7 | 18 | 19 | Bill Kramer | 190 | 1225 | 6.4 | 4 | 20 | Michael Franklin | 263 | 1216 | 4.6 | 5 | 21 | Ron Slack | 271 | 1136 | 4.2 | 14 | 22 | T.C. The video of Pump was shot by the husband of a friend of mine that I work with. Their son was an O-lineman on that team.
