Did any else notice the speed of the guy returning kickoffs for Hawaii? I thought he looked very, very fast. Every bit as fast as Pumphrey. If I were Chow I would certainly get him into the offense in a big way.

No, it wasn't the punter who returned that KO. Speaking of their punter, I'd love to see us recruit a former Australian Rules guy to punt for us. That guy has a way of kicking the ball so that it does some pretty screwy things in flight which makes it difficult to catch. More difficult even than the rugby punt that is becoming more and more fashionable. Plus I'm not sure if anyone else noticed but UH's punter is ambidextrous in that he can punt with either foot. So sorry to sound all giddy about a punter but I was quite impressed. hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=13219&path=football

Believe a number of schools are trying to get punters with that type of style ( Australia / New Zealand-) . Darren Bennett , former Charger punter was also from the down under area , he could provide a connection for Rocky .

Having played against guys in rugby who could kick the ball super high like the Hawaii punter, I can sympathize with Billy Vaughn Jr. I just wished he never attempted to catch it.

That style of punting, while it can be quite effective (as it was against us...), opens itself up to a specifically tailored style of defense against it as well. If I'm not mistaken, once a punter "rolls out" like that, he effectively declares himself a runner and the standard guidelines to protect a defenseless punter (roughing and running into the kicker) are no longer in play. Knowing that you're playing against such a kicker, I believe a team should play against it exactly as they would a "wildcat" formation... play coverage against anyone in the formation who would be a legal receiver, and blitz a man from the outside on both sides with the express intent of clobbering the punter regardless of whether he kicks or runs. If you hit him after he kicks, as I mention above, the conventional "roughing the kicker" rule does not apply against a "runner", so you can aggressively go after tackling him or blocking the kick without that deterrent in the back of your mind.
Once enough teams adopt that strategy, especially those with sufficiently dominant defensive players that it regularly blows up the punt attempt, that style of punting would become much less fashionable. A classic case of the defense catching up with a gadget offense (or in this case punting style).

I noticed on Hawaii's last punt we didn't drop anybody back to receive the kick. Given the field position at that time, and the score, I think that was a wise decision.

Footie is weird, give me rugby Union played it for nearly 18 years. I remember a Lock who could also kick he had straight kick and he had a kind of knuckleball. Jesus that was weird I still wonder how he could do it.
