Week 8 Games to Watch (Rivalry Edition)
#3 Helix Highlanders (5-1) at Mount Miguel Matadors (3-3) All-Time Series: Helix leads 41-16
The Highlanders are coming off three consecutive shutouts, the latest being a 41-0 trashing of then-undefeated Steele Canyon. They now travel to Spring Valley to take on the Matadors, who are looking to bounce back from a 38-26 loss to Valhalla. These teams will face off for the Claymore Sword, a trophy that's been in the Highlanders' possession since 2010.
Players to Watch: Quarterback Michael Austin and halfback Nathan Stinson powers an offensive track meet that helped Helix outscore their last three opponents 125-0. Last week the speedy duel combined for four touchdowns.
Orange Glen Patriots (6-0) at San Pasqual Golden Eagles (0-5) All-Time Series: San Pasqual leads 25-14-1
Orange Glen will be looking to go 7-0 for the first time since 1988, but first they must break a seven-game losing skid to cross-town nemesis San Pasqual in the "Battle of Bear Valley Parkway". Since their overtime loss to Cathedral Catholic in last year's San Diego Section Division I championship game, the Golden Eagles have fallen on some hard times. They're still in search of their first win of 2014 after losing 21 seniors and returning only two starters from last season's 11-2 finish.
Player to Watch: Junior running back Roger Rickman leads Orange Glen's ground attack with 913 yards (4th in the county) and 12 touchdowns (tied for 3rd). He rushed for more than 130 yards in his last five games, and is averaging 152.2 on the season.
La Costa Canyon Mavericks (4-2) at Carlsbad Lancers (3-3) All-Time Series: Tied 10-10 After suffering heartbreaking losses last week, these formally ranked teams will try to get back in the winner's circle in a battle for the city of Carlsbad. La Costa Canyon has won the last seven meetings over the Lancers and will be looking to take their first-ever lead in the series.
Player to Watch: Carlsbad running back Dylan Rutledge rushed for 191 yards during last week's loss to Torrey Pines. He's put up 873 yards and eight touchdowns so far this season. La Jolla Vikings (3-3) at #10 Point Loma Pointers (6-1) All-Time Series: Point Loma leads 44-20-5 This will be the 70th game of a long standing rivalry that started back in 1926. The newly ranked Pointers, who won the last 10 games over the Vikings, have been on a five-game win streak since dropping an 8-7 contest to Ramona. La Jolla has won their last two games after starting the season at 1-3.
Players to Watch: La Jolla senior quarterback Colin Rugg leads the county with 24 passing touchdowns, and places second with 1731 passing yards. His top targets, Brandon Bonham and Carlton O'Neal, have over 30 catches each.

Vista dominated 5-1 El Camino 31-14 AT El Camino.
QB Nate Johnson has ignited what had been a stagnant offense and Vista has looked like classic Vista for the last 2 weeks (with a combined score of 66-14 over those 2 games).

You know how the theys that say stuff say, college football is better when USC (local one) and ND are good? I think SD football is better when the Panthers are good. It seems that they are improving. What are their chances in their league, and in the county?

What are their chances in their league, and in the county? Their defense is outstanding, and since moving Nate Johnson to QB the offense looks really good. I can see them winning at least one playoff game and possibly making a run in D1 (they probably won't qualify for the open division). They looked really good last night.
