Anyone else feel that lost in all the (warranted) attention in the freshman class is stud transfer Angelo Chol? Will be a 4th year junior, has two total years with us, and has had a chance to play with some elite big men from BOTH Arizona and SDSU (current NBA and future NBA level talent). His motor and defensive skill-set at first glance seem to be a nice mix between Skylar Spencer (shot-blocking capability) and Josh Davis (rebound machine). I don't know, I love our freshmen, but Chol is who I am most excited to see. Would love to see him either start at the 4 or come early off the bench and have solid minutes. Him and Spencer could definitely be a force.

However in the press conference from yesterday, when talking about the PG position, it seemed that Winston was planning on playing wing. IMHO, starting Chol means either Winston goes point or Dwayne or JJ come off the bench. Chol and Shrigley coming first off the bench seem more likely, with JJ starting at the 4 spot. Just my initial thoughts.

Whatever happens, I will be happy if Chol can be productive and log a lot of minutes, especially with Zylan out until late Dec./early Jan.

And based upon what I'm starting to hear about the battle for PG being between Williams, AQ and Zabo, I not hearing any talk of WIII playing there. Although my gut says WIII does play point. Beast will certainly be the first big off the bench if WII doesn't slide to point. Me thinks Trey will replace Shrigs as the first shooter off the bench.

Chol was still pretty raw when he left Arizona. Hopefully a year to work on his skills without the distraction of playing "real" games will turn his potential into something tangible on the court. I don't think he is lost in the conversation at all and I expect he can make up for the loss of Davis. He won't be the dominant rebounder Davis was but he is better shooting the ball and is a better shot blocker. I'm excited to see him, the freshmen, Williams and Allen (after a year in the program) as well as the guys we counted on last year. To me a big part of Fisher's success with this program has been that his players improve each year they are here. Hell, people keep wondering whether JJ is going to have much of a role this year with all the talent we have on the squad. It says a lot for where we have come when we start to wonder if JJ is "good" enough to help us. By the way, I think JJ is going to have a solid season for us.

I just want to see how he plays. I'm not even going to speculate on how good he is until he gets on the floor and shows me something.

JJO'B starts every year, just as he has for every single game of his entire D1 career. And every year some psoters talk about JJ coming off the bench.

Stephens started a lot of games for us. He would not have started last year nor this year. Players often get a lot of playing time purely out of necessity. We have not had much talent nor depth at the 4/5 positions. That is changing. Spencer is becoming an absolute beast. Davis was huge for us last year. He was a truly impactful transfer. I hope that Chol is the kind of transfer that makes a big and immediate impact. If he is the player that I hope he is, he and an improved Spencer will demand big minutes. I would guess that many of those minutes will be played together. I don't want to see the "three bigs sets" that I saw last year. If JJ is the better four give him more minutes than Chol. If Chol makes our team better then give him more minutes. I was wrong in thinking of obrien as a natural three. I think that Shepard gives us everything that JJ can give us on the wing and more. When Winston is on the bench, I think that our offense would be much better with shooter on the floor. That shooter will likely be a combination of Shrigley, Kell, and Pope. With the talent that this team now has it is not enough to play smart and hard to earn your minutes each player will need to impact the team in direct measurable ways.

From Goaztecs www.goaztecs.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/jj_obrien_796211.html One last year: "Only DNP occurred when head coach Steve Fisher elected not to play him (rest) in the McNeese State game (12-21-13)". And one as a Soph: "The lone non-start was on Senior Day." And don't forget JJO'B started 21 of the 22 games he played in at Utah. So, JJO'B has started 111 of his 113 games. I'm no bekays, but I think it's safe to say he will start as a senior this coming year.

My answer then as now is Angelo . He's a mix of Sky and Josh, but this guy can put the ball in the bucket in other ways than straight down.

I am not a huge JJ fan since I think he really needs to find an outside shot to provide some offense, and he is a bit of a tweener, but when Fisher has two players representing the team at the opening press conference and one of them is JJ, then I kind of think he might start. LOL. Oh yeah, and every time they interview Fisher he gushes about all the intangibles JJ brings to the table and how much he loves him being a team player.
My guess is Spencer and JJ start with Chol coming off the bench, maybe filling in at both positions early in the season with Cheathum and Pope out.

Post injury, JJ was awful last year and was given way too many minutes. I hope that coach plays the best combination of players. We had a super hero scorer on the team last year and our offense was still very limited. Our inability to knock down shots cost us against AZ and New Mexico. There is a very good chance that a healthy JJ is our best option at the four. If he is not, then Chol and Spencer should see a lot court time together. Either way, JJ will see big minutes when either Skylar or Chol are on the bench. JJ should get no minutes at the wing based on his performance last year. If he is getting more minutes than the other "bigs" and logging major wing minutes it should be because he is the best option and not because of some misplaced loyalty or past history. JJ has played a ton of minutes in his career and thus far has been a utility player. He has not been a number one or two scoring option. He has not been a dominant defensive force. He has not been a great ball handler and distributor. He hasn't been a matchup problem for other teams. He has been given as much oppurtunity to develop as anyone on this team. I think that he has been playing close to his ceiling. I don't expect a huge leap in his performance this year. I hope that I am wrong. I would like to see a more fluid offense this year. I would like to see us keep defenses honest. I would like to see us knock down shots and actually share the ball. The one man gang style of offense was not always our style and I hope the trend ends this year.

Chol and Sky on the floor together will change Fish's defensive approach. All wing players on D can switch 1-4. With two bigs in the game it makes that more difficult. I am sure it will happen against certain teams: CSU, UNLV, UNM.
Not having Z and Pope hurts us as well, there was talk about pressing for 40 minutes, but if we do that we'll need fresh legs and good feet.
Pope has one good leg, Z one good foot.
