Arctic sea ice according to IPCC 1990 report Arctic sea ice according to NOAA Notice that 1975 was identical to 2014. 40 years of melting Arctic ice leaves us right where we were 40 years ago. That is like the old joke about your father walking 3 miles back and forth to school every day and it was uphill both ways.

The ice melt extent for 2014 is not yet known, the melt season is not over.

The charts Bill has posted are measurements of variations from a norm. The problem is the data used to measure the norms are different. Now if Bill would be so kind to provide the minimum Arctic Sea ice extent in 1975 we could compare it to the sea ice extent currently. I suspect there will be less ice by end of season, if not now.

The ice melt extent for 2014 is not yet known, the melt season is not over. The graph is variance so that doesn't matter.

Both 1975 and 2014 are 2 million SQ KM below 1979. 1975 was not a relative low. In 1972 the CIA stated in their climate report (cooling fears) that Arctic sea ice increased 15% over the past 10 years (1962-1972). In case you missed it 1962 was 15% below 1972.
