Hadn't heard, or read anything and maybe it is too early yet. But, I was wondering if the Aztecs will be looking for a new Baseball coach, or are they going to allow Mark Martinez to take over now that we don't have T.Gwynn with us anymore?

I always figured they'd let Coach Martinez continue.

if they were planning to replace Martinez, then giving him a promotion a few months back would have been really stupid

Martinez has been the HC for SDSU for the past couple seasons already, so nothing is going to change there. He already got the prior promotion.

Plus, they gave him a contract extension.

Plus, they gave him a contract extension. So why didn't Sterk explore other possibilities out there? Totally lame.

Feeling good about having Martinez and Pawlowski at the at the helms. Martinez has a very good reputation plus his assistant, Pawlowski, is the former head coach at Auburn. Please tell me who your choice would be?

I think when Tony was given a one year contract extension recently and Martinez was given a 3 or 4 year extension at the same time many of here figured that was proof Martinez was the unofficial head coach in waiting. We just thought he wait was going to be longer that it was. I would bet that Tony was consulted about Martinez being his replacement as well.

We seem to be doing well, and Martinez was instrumental in that. He has earned every right to be the HC. Now if we could just get a better OOC sked than last year, we will be gravy.

Why would he? He had a very good coach in place already, and the team is successful & improving. Continuity is a good thing. He'd have been foolish to replace Martinez, and the right thing to do was to show faith in him by extending his contract knowing he's the heir apparent.

He's been with Tony for how long? The smart thing to do is always explore your options, even if you think the existing guy is adequate. Due diligence is using a basis of comparison. Martinez should have to go through the interview process like every other candidate. OTOH, Sterk has a horrible track record when he hires from outside so maybe Martinez would be the lesser of two evils in this case. Some fans will buy whatever is sold to them anyway, plus others don't care about this program since it's not a money maker. I think that's the shame of it all.

Well, I can only hope that Coach Martinez brings half the intangibles that Tony came with…

Because he's proven he can win here. HE was the head coach last year, the team responded. Plus he was the guy in charge of player evaluations and recruiting. The players strongly wanted him to be their baseball coach; they've known Tony was just a figure head the past 2-3 seasons, given his health. Some fans will never be happy even when the right guy is already in place. Speaking of "Due diligence", but definition, is doing a comprehensive appraisal of the business/situation in order to evaluate it's potential. Anyone who's followed the team and appraised the situation can see the team is heading in the right direction under Martinez.

Why would you publicly undercut your de facto coach and show weakness? Sent from my SM-G900V using proboards

Speaking of "Due diligence", but definition, is doing a comprehensive appraisal of the business/situation in order to evaluate it's potential. Anyone who's followed the team and appraised the situation can see the team is heading in the right direction under Martinez. Some fans also have valuable opinions by expressing different outtakes. How would you or I know if the right guy is in place as opposed to potential outsiders? Many MLB players will say they loved playing for their fired manager so that's nothing new. BTW, the team responded for Tony at times too. This is a weak baseball conference whereas SDSU is surrounded by a lot of HS baseball talent. But I've seen the end results for many years, including the last few. It bugs me that SDSU's baseball team hasn't represented as it should. I used to read the box scores of almost every game, but now all I do is glance in goaztecs.com or this board on whether they won or lost. So if Martinez is your spark, have at it. He should attract the same number of fans as Strasberg did on the days he pitched here. Winning draws fans, right?
