General Motors, once the most powerful manufacturing company in the world, goes from misstep to misstep. In terms of product, Pontiac was the first to get the ax. Next came Saturn, a brand much more worth saving than Pontiac. Now Saab seems destined for extinction. This is one impending death that can almost entirely be blamed on horrible management. That and the pernicious effects of a labor union that got so big that it could force concessions from management that, in the short run, seemed marvelous but in the long run were ruinous. Mostly, however, I lay the blame at the feet of decades of smug, clueless management heading up GM. Read Brock Yates' book The Decline and Fall of the American Automobile Industry for a detailed account of that sad story. online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703499404574561852827787042.html?mod=djemEditorialPageAzWm
