He-e-e-e-e-e-lp!
A friend posted pictures today (TBT) of iconic national chains that are no longer with us (Montgomery Wards,White Front,Thom McCann,Woolworth,SS Kresge,Robert Hall, etc),and naturally the conversation turned toward local chains (Walker Scott,Fedmart, etc) and/or merchants of San Diego.
Well,I got stuck trying to recall the name of a shoe store two or three storefronts away from Broadway on 5th downtown. It was directly across the street from the National Shirt Shops store.Their tagline was, shoes for men and boys.
Was it Hardy's??
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Thanks.

I found a 1903 San Diego Directory and found "Shoes for Men and Boys" listed under Lion Clothing Co. Lion Clothing Co, 5th nw cor G. Thanks,Bill.I'm leaning toward Hardy's for some reason, and I'm guessing it started business in the 1940s; maybe'50s. Not sure, but I do recall a Lion something in that area, and they could have possibly owned the store. There was also a Hudson Shoe Store owned by none other than Archie Moore on 12th. I'm waiting for a response from some friends I texted who I know shopped there. They had styles and sizes that the Florsheims of the era back then didn't have, and for a lot lower price...They were also American made,of course.

Great piece there,Bill. ..."Sixty-two miles" of paved roads, and the ONLY harbor south of San Francisco? LOL!
We actually were ahead of Los Angeles and Long Beach on the harbor front at one time.
