The last die off of polar bears was in the mid 70s because of too much sea ice. When there is too much sea ice the bears can't hunt and strave to death. Since the recent warming the polar bears have increased back to pre-1970s numbers. Be 2020s we should start seeing problems with too much sea ice again and polar bear problems.

There are approximately 19 worldwide polar bear populations, the Fish and Wildlife action was based solely on reviewing data for only one of those populations in western Hudson Bay which has declined by 259 bears in last 17 years. The decline is due to hunting to prevent overpopulation and ironically the Canadian government is looking to increase the quota.
