It is hard to figure out what is propping that place up. I have thought that it would have fallen apart years ago but somehow it just keeps on going.

It is hard to figure out what is propping that place up. I have thought that it would have fallen apart years ago but somehow it just keeps on going. I've been playing around with a nasty scenario that might play out in N. Korea. Let's say that a particularly bad drought or some other natural event were to pretty much wipe out the N. Korean crop one year. Then, let's further assume that some pandemic were to break out, killing tens of thousands of N. Koreans. How much would it take for the vast percentage of the population (i.e., all but the favored apparatchiks and military) to go berserk, rising up to kill their oppressors? Maybe, in this scenario, large numbers of the police and army might join the rebellion. Sure, the Baby Doc wannabe would order thousands to be killed, but at some point the uprising might reach critical mass and overwhelm the government. It is frightening to imagine the tragedy of massive killing, starvation, and destruction of property that would occur. As with you, I am amazed that N. Korea still functions at all. One important question is this: Will China, at some point, finally get so fed up with their N. Korean clients that they say, "That's it, no more support for you"? If my nightmare scenario were to come true, it's hard to imagine how the collapse would spill over N. Korea's borders. It would not be pretty. AzWm |
