The poorer countries have not kept up their immunization programs and "Wild Polio" is claiming victims in the less developed countries of Africa. It has now spread from Africa to Asia and is present in half a hundred countries.

I had what they believed to be a fairly mild case of Polio in the summer after Kindergarten. I was sick for a day and a half and when I tried to get out of bed and walk my legs would not work. I could gradually move them, one at a time and over the course of several months could walk again, but I never regained the speed that I had as a child. MY cousin who was almost as fast as I was when we were both little children went on to become State high school Low Hurdles Sprint Champion in the 1960's in Illinois. In the late Sixties I found that even though I could not run like my cousin, I could box quite well as long as somebody was willing to stand still and exchange blows with me. To get them to do that, you had to verbally challenge them and call them cowards for backing away in the ring. If I could get them to want to bust my pretty face by insulting them, I could always knock them out.

Polio causes spinal damage. If it is low enough in the spine, it will just effect your legs. Higher up, and it can effect your breathing and they have to put you in a breathing machine. If the Fifties they called them Iron Lungs. Most of the kids put in Iron Lungs died within a few years anyway.

Polio vaccines, as well as all the other vaccines have saved millions and millions of lives. Sadly there are a bunch of very stupid Americans who are not vaccinating their children now-a-days.

Measles can kill. Mumps can kill. Rubella can kill. Polio can kill. Influenza kills 35,000 people a year in the United States and that is largely because people do not keep up their immunizations.

What a shame.

Actually, in India where Polio is making a comeback in the non-Immunized population, the government is a non socialist democracy, but they do have some poorly funded socialist programs. The people who do not get the shots in that country are the untouchables.

There have been Polio outbreaks in diverse places in Africa. The governments range from dictatorship to democracy. There are no real socialist states in Black Africa.
