Sure, we have 2 games to go, and how the Aztec 11 does in those games, win or lose, really is important. Nevertheless, I am moving into the "How will we do next year?" mode.
Let's see what's on tap for S.D.S.U. in 2010.
First, non-conference. I think we will win at least two of the four games. Missouri is, I'm afraid, likely out of reach. Nicholls State is a W (if not, Hoke will start looking like Chuck Long, but I don't anticipate that). That leaves New Mexico State, away, and Utah State, at home. I think both will be improved next year, though by how much I can't say. I'm hoping for two wins, which would make us 3-1 outside the MWC.
Next, the Mountain West. Away games against TCU, BYU, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Home against CSU, Air Force, Utah, and UNLV. I think we may do better against TCU, BYU, and Utah, but I see three losses there. UNLV, New Mexico, and CSU should be reasonably beatable.
That leaves Wyoming and Air Force as the key MWC games next year. I'm afraid that we will not win in Laramie. The Cowboys are believing in themselves and will have great momentum going for them. Winning in Laramie is always tough. Air Force may be beatable, but they are always tough, too.
All that adds up, at least in my fevered mind, to 3-1 non-conference, and 3-5 in conference, with a total of 6-6. .500 next year, in my opinion, is neither too optimistic nor too pessimistic. 6-6 is respectable, but will barely register in the minds of the general San Diego football fan, a fan who is used to disrespecting (with reason) Aztec football. Attendance will suck again, and by December we will be left hoping for 7 or 8 wins in 2011.
So, going into 2011, San Diego State University will be working on a streak of TWELVE STRAIGHT YEARS WITHOUT A WINNING SEASON AND WITHOUT A BOWL APPEARANCE! Talk about a Lost Decade!
You think, short of opening the season with 5 or 6 straight wins, we will see non-Sky Show crowds larger than 20,000? Maybe larger than 15,000?
I doubt it.
