This is why normally topics are kept on a single thread, in this case the "Ukraine" thread, so you don't get these tangential spins. The article I psotted on your several threads but best discussed in the more complex conversation. Regardless, here you go in response to Slate's thought that Putin miscalculated, he didn't. He knew exactly what he is doing. Here is The Politico's take, basically saying that there isn't much the West can do as Putin doesn't care and accurately thinks we wouldn't do anything anyway. He appears to be spot on as we've done nothing. The President didn't even attend his on crisis meeting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, opting instead to let Susan Rice chair it and report to him. Putin gets it. We are the butt of his joke. The question is, does he start looking farther? Estonia and their ethnic Russian population, other parts of Ukraine, back to Georgia, parts of Khazakstan? No matter which way events unfold, we in the United States have next to no influence anymore due to the general lack of respect or even contempt that not only Putin and the Russians have for Obama but also the rest of Europe feels much the same way. The dependence that Cremia has on the Ukraine is one reason for Putin to keep going to have control of the water and power lifeline.
