You can’t appreciate what we have without honoring the man who’s vision created San Diego State – Dr Edward Hardy (1868-1958) Hardy became President in 1910 of a two-year school that trained elementary school teachers. He lobbied to get the Normal Schools converted to four-year schools granting bachelor of education degrees (BE) for training elementary and secondary school teachers. He had San Diego JC merged with the normal school, established the athletic program hiring C E Peterson who had once taught summer school for him years earlier. By the 1920’s Hardy envision the school becoming an independent public university like Louisville or Cincinnati and the athletic program in the PCC (now Pac 12). It was Hardy that got the school relocated to a real college campus with unique architecture not found at any other State school. Aztec Bowl was designed to eventually be expanded to 40,000, a size unheard of in the 1930’s for an on-campus stadium. Aztec Gym (1932) was state-of-the-art back then. By the time Hardy retired, the school had been authorized to grant degrees in more than education. He had the vision back then - almost 100 years ago. Check out his quote on getting the Montezuma Mesa campus. www.sandiegohistory.org/online_resources/hardy.html

What? No John Madden? If I was going to make a 5 story statue in honor of San Diego State I would put one of the most recognized football people in the world on that mountainside.

While I've always appreciated the fondness Madden typically displays for SDSU every chance he gets, he was only here for a cup of coffee, really. Coryell hired him to be an assistant coach on defense. He was here for the '64, '65 and '66 seasons before Al Davis hired him away as a coordinator under Sid Gillman. The rest, as they say, is history. Madden is a Bay Area guy. He went to middle school and high school there. He went to college for a couple years at Oregon before transferring to Cal Poly, where he earned a bachelor's and masters. His ties to SDSU, while important, aren't career-defining.

COME ON, PHOTOSHOPPERS! WHERE ARE YOU!?! Not my best, but........ That's not too bad at all. And I totally concur with those four. It's fitting Faulk would be on a monument called Mount "Rush-More". Coryell would want to change the name though.
