Good article. He proves a point I have long been trying to tell you... "It would be a good thing if American liberals, in their zeal to defend a liberal president, would in fact shelve for good their doctrines about diversity, multiculturalism, and American imperialism." I am what you would consider an American liberal, and I am not defending the President. The President is a conservative leaning centrist - I'll say it again and again.
But really, the article was very fair and correct until the author mistakenly combines the notion of exceptionalism in the national sense, and exceptionalism in the individual sense. America is no doubt an exceptional nation, we have been for the last 200-someodd years. But no, Americans are no more exceptional than any other group of people. The distinction is important. As Putin writes and the author quotes, "It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional," when asking to bomb a sovereign country, anyway.
Actually, another dumb comment that detracts from whatever his point is... "And the idea of American exceptionalism is a myth used to cover up crimes against women and minorities at home and the poor and oppressed abroad." Blah blah blah, save it...

"Liberals and leftists attacked the Iraq war because they denied that the United States had the right or the capacity to export its institutions abroad."
I am curious which institutions we exported? Besides our defense contractors and servicemen.
