I'm getting a bit weary of having to defend my libertarian values against the attacks of the usual gang of collectivist AztecMesans. Okay, here is my #1 value; Citizens have rights and the government should abridge those rights as infrequently as possible. Corollary to #1 value; the government should not stop a citizen from making any kind of a freely agreed upon contractual relationship with another citizen or with a private company. (Obvious exceptions would be when such agreements consist of using force or the threat of force against other citizens. Example: it's not okay to pay Murder, Inc. to kill your extremely annoying Uncle. Louie.)
In the health care field, ObamaCare was specifically designed to limit the freedom of choice currently enjoyed by individual citizens. Why should I pay for coverage that includes (A) services that I do not want or need, or (B) services that should properly be thought of as normal maintenance. Operating a motor vehicle is a useful comparison. No one in his or her might mind would think that auto insurance should include brake adjustments, oil changes, or new windshield wiper blades. If such things were included, the cost of auto insurance would go way up.
Unfortunately, that is the philosophy behind ObamaCare. More and more, it is becoming clear that the ACA was horribly designed, with virtually no thought given to unintended consequences. For that matter, many of the problems that are now obvious were in fact identified before the bill was passed, but the Dems were in no mood to listen. True believers who see other points of view as mean-spirited and unworthy of even a moment's reflection can't waste time on foolish distractions.
I would like to point out that this author (see link) does favor universal coverage. Please read and point out flaws in his thesis, if you can find any.
