Back in the day, I was in the stands at Berkeley for an epic game against USC. Cal had Chuck Muncie and SC had Ricky Bell. They were both incredible running backs. At one point Ricky Bell ran to the right for an 87 yard score. Luckily for us Cal fans, it got called back on a hold. Muncie was unbelievable that day, and Cal got a rare win against SC. In later years I was going to State and Chuck had fallen on hard times. He had developed a terrible cocaine problem and had burned through all of his money. I went into the Old Ox in PB one night and he was working as a bouncer! I talked to him for a bit and he just seemed like a really great guy. Hopefully in later years he was able to overcome his problems.

And now thinking back to the quarterback of the 75 team, the late Joe Roth. The pre-season Heisman favorite for 1976, he played half the season very sick from melanoma. He actually played in two bowl games, and then died a month or so later! tragic.

I can recall Muncie running a sweep and thinking it wasn't fair that a man that big could get to the corner so quickly! He gave us a lot of great Charger memories. RIP, Chuck!

In the mid-90's I remember seeing Chuck running the door at the Old Box. Years after his playing days he was in shape but still a very large man. Very humble too. I'm trying to think of a modern RB who goes 6'3, 225 pounds with that blend of power and grace.
