I'm not one of those guys who hates Spanos or thinks he doesn't want to win and win HERE. In fact, I think his desire to win has blinded him (and by extension, this new staff) to the possibility that a total rebuild might be in order. I happen to think this to be the case. The question is whether Rivers will be around once the inevitable total rebuild is over. The answer, probably, is no. We're talking about three years once it starts. Even if he is around, will he be over the hill? The shorter version of my opinion: Let this guy go. He was never an "elite quarterback" to start with, and he's not gonna get any smarter or better over the next couple years even if he maintains his physical health. They don't have the cap space for the dead money and they don't have a replacement. And you don't need to create another hole in the roster. If this is truly a rebuild then you can take a year or two to see if he can get back to form and bridge to the next QB if that becomes necessary.

You're going to let go a QB who had multiple consecutive 4,000 yard seasons? Block for him. Give him a running game and some weapons and he's top 10 in the league. Easily.

Can we just accept the fact that Rivers' best day are behind him? The San DIego CHargers had a run, they came up short, just like many teams do. It was sad to see AJ slowly disassemble what he had assembled and still think that his team had a chance at winning. The guy pretty much buckled under the pressure, and thought the through sheer will his team would be great. Not going to happen when you let the best 3rd down back in the game slip through your fingers, and then one of the top receivers in the game go a year later... who on gods green earth thinks that your teams is going to be better when you let great players go, and you have no one to replace them? Who?
...
Rivers is done.

It is amazing to me that so many Chargers fans (of which I am one also) hold on to this notion that somehow Philip Rivers is an elite QB.
He isn't and never has been. All you have to do is look at his career playoff performances and it tells you everything you need to know.
Everyone wants to blame the O line for last season, conveniently ignoring the obvious fact that there were many times when the protection was fine and Rivers made horrible decisions/throws/plays that have nothing to do with the protection.
Anyone with eyes can see he has happy feet in the pocket and is so slow and non-athletic that it takes perfect pass protection for him to do anything.
Much like when it was obvious LT was finished, the Chargers will hold on to him too long before facing the facts. Why have a $20 million a year bad QB on a team in a complete rebuild? It makes no sense.

Rivers is fine. Zero receivers and no line. Those are just facts.
