My son laughs at the 30,000 attendance figure. I'm included to think that the actual figure may have been in the low 20s. Still, that would be better than what we have been getting lately.
As for the game, one can look at it two ways. First, one can say that the Aztecs dropped passes, missed tackles, etc. All true. Hoke's post game press conference remarks emphasized the negatives, and there were plenty.
On the other hand, if someone had told me that BYU would run 91 plays and score 38 points, I would have thought the game was going to be at least a minor rout (38-10, 38-7, etc.). I would never have imagined that the final winning margin would be just 10 points and, in fact, S.D.S.U. was seriously within striking distance well into the 4th quarter.
In other words, it could have been worse. The Aztecs did not just fold late in the game.
But this team is still a dozen good players short of competing with the conference's best schools. If the run game cannot be upgraded substantially, I don't see better than 6-6 next year. One can only hope that the staff will be able to snatch several really good linemen in Feb.
Right now I have to think that getting to a bowl game even next year is questionable.
But there is progress. The biggest negative is not that Hoke is failing to improve the team. The biggest negative is that the program has been so mismanaged for so long that we may be running out of time.

Next year? Hey, it's 2009......a "W" over CSU and a bowl game is within reach.....and with a few breaks, the Aztecs just might give TCU a run for their money.
