Peters is a hard-core military guy who spares no one, left or right, in his pieces on Afghanistan and Pakistan. I see him as a very objective observer. These excerpts come from his latest view of those two troubled countries. . . The sole hope for either Afghanistan or Pakistan isn't more weary American soldiers, nor is it our hugs-not-slugs counterinsurgency nonsense, nor is it lavish aid. The only hope for either beleaguered territory (these really are territories, not authentic states) is a decision by its own population to fight and defeat the Taliban. ======= Pakistan's government remains determined to protect "its" Taliban. Even now, the Pakistanis refuse to see that you can't manipulate religious extremists to your own ends -- inevitably, they turn on you. ======= An expert insider points out that the Pakistanis have a disastrous history of strategic miscalculation dating back to the country's founding. Whether dealing with India or Afghanistan, they've never guessed right. ======= The Afghan situation's immeasurably worse. Pakistan's military at least has a high degree of national spirit. After eight years of our training and aid, the Afghan army couldn't and wouldn't defend downtown Kabul. www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/america_last_chances_in_afpak_pLX5sBcg278rFtxhGGkasMAzWm

Which would suggest you believe we should haul ass from Afghanistan. Is that what you are advocating?

I think that we all want Obama to stop dithering and do something. He is frozen at the wheel and has no idea what direction to go. Obama is at least smart enough to see that he has surrounded himself with people equally inept and dumb and the resulting inaction and lack of any comprehension of the situation is only so expected.

Just what is Bush running for and what does Lee Iacocca's thoughts have to do with it? Obama is now earning an "F" for his actions not a speclative "F" from some long gone Chrysler has been.
