His ball handling and shooting % need to be improved. He still makes me nervous, even though we have seen some big improvements. He also needs to continue improvements on keeping his head screwed on straight when he screws up or has a call against him. Overall, though, I think he will be a great Aztec and I am glad he is on our team. We have to remember he is a Freshman.

He still needs some time to improve his defense. Not enough ball pressure IMO. A few more pounds wouldn't hurt either. I think ball pressure is tough with the guys he's asked to guard. He's guarding smaller/quicker guys and doesn't want to get beat so he can give a little cushion and still contest shots with his length.

Kawhi is a poor example. Yes his 3FG% was not all that great, but it was 29%, not 15%. And he was the best player on a team with 3 losses the whole season. He was a double double machine. The NBA looks at you when you are already that good and have even more upside to your game. NBA managers aren't going to waste a lottery pick on someone that is currently average but has potential to be a star, that is what the D-League is for. First, Kawhi was truly awful from behind the arc. He shot 20% his freshman year. And if I recall, he was at 15% for most of the year before he sank a few and brought it up to 20%. But we quibble. Shepard isn't any worse of a shooter than Kawhi. He's probably even better and has a bigger upside, shooting-wise. Shep is shooting 25% right now from behind the arc, so the comparison to Kawhi is legit. Furthermore, if Shep begins playing 30 to 35 min. per game, he, too, will be a double-double machine. And if you recall, the majority of people on this board and around the community loudly stated that Kawhi wasn't ready for the NBA. He needed to work on his shot. He needed to stay in school. Etc., etc., etc. And that wasn't the case. The D-League isn't for guys like Kawhi and Shepard. It's for guys like Malcolm Thomas and Billy White -- tweeners who might be able to make the jump if given the chance. Not guys who already have the physical tools, but just need some seasoning. You are comparing Kawhi's only weakness to Shepard and ignoring all of the attributes that actually made him attractive to the NBA. You really think that is a fair comparison? Your argument is basically that Kawhi sucked at 3FG shooting and so does Shepard, so he should be a lottery pick too. I think we need to just "agree to disagree" on this one.

why do we get another potential NBA player. Why set up another situation where we divide Aztec fans about 1 player when we need a team effort. Shepard is not as bad as first posted or ready to jump to the NBA . He is now doing things the coaches expected him to do Pass Well, play D, block shots, drive to the basket. Still has to learn if playing point forward or point guard , to take care of the basketball on the dribble, shoot jump shots, FT % is very important , shot selection, be a great not just good team mate , listen to the coaches, work on his game in the gym. Like his game just want to see it get even better. and realize the most important thing is the team getting a W. The further the team goes in March Madness , his play will get noticed along with every other play er on the team.

He has all the potential in the world, as does a ton of other players that have yet to make it come to fruition. The speculation is fun to do for those that like to speculate, so let them speculate.

What is his work ethic? Is he a gym rat like Kawhi and Jamal? If so then, provided his attitude stays respectful, he does have possible high NBA draft potential. Winston definately needs to work on his shot, both FT and Jump Shots.
