Its not time to feel down about ourselves, as the feeling of failure will pass as time proceeds forwards. We will have more opportunity at BYU and have opportunity to refine our football team into the elite stratosphere, as our football proceeds into the next season.
I have a couple of points I like to make regarding the game and how to move forward.
First of all ESPN was a bit biased and I am not sure if it was me, it was all about BYU during that game, maybe its because it was ESPN that BYU has a contract with and boosting their resume is probably in there best interest. I don't think BYU ever leaves INDY, Because ESPN has to much capital interest invested in BYU and would like to see them succeed. I think the officiating depicted ESPN's authority a bit, and was evident by a under the belt blocking call that clearly was disputable. The Funmble/TD was also disputable, and it was clearly seen that the arm was moving forward. I felt that ESPN just wanted BYU to win and weren't objective at all. SDSU was 10 times better than BYU and I felt it was up to us to make the plays down the stretch that would lead to a victory and we didn't, so thats why we lost. But the biggest fail in all this was fan support. So my points are as follows.
END SEASON POINTS:
1. Fan support. I can't find the link but a CBS podcast that I was over hearing a few weeks ago, had an analyst that stated,"what SDSU needs is its own STADIUM." Similar to what ECU and FSU have. After the lack luster fan support in yesterdays game I also agree and hold some shame, because I didn't go and do my part to support the team yesterday. I have to admit I hate going to Qualcomm, the outdated stadium is a hassle and doesn't feel like a college/home game and it just not worth it. I have only gone there for 6 SDSU games and never went back in the last two years. I just don't like it. I think SDSU needs to house a 50k stadium like ECU does. If we had a home field fan support the outcome could have been avoided especially after the TO in the early 4rth quarter. I think a full filled stadium would have brought the energy needed to overcome the costly TO (questionable TO). I don't care how SDSU does it but they need to create one and they need to do it quickly before its to late. San Diego State needs to ask for help to build one and get the city to back it up.
2. We need bigger games. I think SDSU should have taken the Alabama game to better prepare for big games. We might lose but at least the staff and players would know what a premier team and program look like, so that we could emulate. We just need change in how we view every game, I felt that we just gave up a bit and unraveled after the fumble/TD TO happened. I felt our kids just weren't ready for Prime Time Stresses. We are a better team but got outplayed in the end. Happened in Fresno and SJSU. We need to make plays and we need the recruits with the skills to do it. We need to be put in situations were we must overcome our skill set to win games. We did it once this year and we must find a formula to do it again. Bigger games is a must to achieve success at a higher level.
3. We need to keep our coaching staff for consistency. We can't keep losing our coaches that got us here. We need them and must rely on their experience, and what they learn from being with us for a long time. I hear talks of Ludwig leaving and other coaches. SDSU needs to start doing everything possible to stop coaches from leaving. Longer contracts, better pay, or whatever it takes to keep our coaching staff is needed.
4. We need the capital to do all this and if going to the Big East or a improved MWC is the answer then so be it. We need money to fund most of the things said above. Donations and City support is a must if SDSU wants to get onto a new level in football. I think the Donations are there but the city support is not.
5. Bad Aztec Press conference. I am ashamed how badly the press conference are being organized by SDSU. If you ever watched Boise press conference you will notice that it is highly organized and refined. Boise conference offers a sense of importance. 6 mics directed for their head coach. I could here the questions that the press asks. Conferences are fluent with little delays between questions being asked, and highlights of games are well edited. I would like a atmosphere similar to Boise during press conferences. I can't even hear the players or the questions being asked for SDSU athletics. SDSU needs to do a lot better. I almost feel ashamed to speak my mind but I cant stand it any longer. Lastly upgrade SDSU's highlights with better cameras w/audio. It sounds mono tone and I highly dislike the effort put in. SDSU needs better PR management in these areas. The most annoying thing for me is to watch a highlight reel that is jumpy and then be aggravated by the sound of only one of my speakers working. What gives?
If we want to become Prime Time we need to start acting like it. Not only the team, but as fans, school administrators, public relations, and anyone involved with SDSU. We need to emulate OSU's or Alabama's in order to become what SDSU can be, which is a Penn State status in the western states. "I believe, I believe we, I believe we..." Do we really? I suggest we all start acting like it. Yeah this was a blown opportunity but we will have more, and we could start with a new stadium that we could call our own. Question is who will fund it and if we will have the support from the city to create one.
