Just want to be the first to say on this board that the members of the IOC are apparently a bunch of "racists" for turning down Chicago's bid for the Olympics after Pres. & Mrs. Obama and Oprah gave such impassioned speeches. There, I said it, beating the liberals to the punch.

Actually, you are the one that brought it up.

Saw a cartoon to this effect today even before the announcement. Well at least it was not a complete waste of time and tax money to go beg for the Chicago Mob Headquarters. He just about had to meet with Gen McChrystal.

Personally I think it was quite justified since it's ridiculous that it took the IOC so long to award the games to a Latin American venue (and that's where the racism, or more accurately, the elitism, lies). =Bob

Agreed, but not a South American venue. I'm just hoping that what happened before the Mexico City Olympics does not reoccur in Brazil. Hundreds, if not thousands of students "disappeared" in the months leading up the the Mexico City Olympics (someone I knew at the time was in touch with a lot of Mexican university profs said they were getting phone calls about their classes being pretty much emptied). I doubt it will, but from what I've heard, there are serious cardboard shanty towns lining the freeway from the airport to the center of the city and I have to wonder if they will be displaced by force just to put a better image on the city and the country. It will be interesting to see how Brazil deals with that. =Bob

I find it interesting that Chicago was generally considered to be second as a choice for the 2016 Olympics but that with Obama, Michelle and Oprah making their pitches that Chicago was eliminated in the first ballet.
I am struggling to see how I feel about this. Did Chicago dodge a bullet by avoiding the expense? Am I glad because Obama failed at something else? Would the Olympics have provided a boost to the US in economic terms with Chicago getting a much needed helping hand?
I must admit that with the way we generally feel about the attitudes of international organizations like this, that it is surprising that Obama was not effective and may have even been a negitive for our effort to get the Olympic Games for Chicago.

Lots of people on the right are saying that the failure of Obama to persuade the IOC to select Chicago for 2016 is a big blow to his prestige. They are reading a bit too much into this episode in my opinion.
Since The One actually flew to Europe and put his rep on the line, so to speak, the speedy elimination of Chicago is a blow. Not a huge one, but a blow nonetheless. Let's understand the nature of the blow. It will be nothing compared to the blow Obama will suffer (note that I am making this a prediction) when, on his watch, the Mullahs announce that they are a nuclear military power. (That prediction may not literally come true if Obama is a one term president; at this point, however, I'd still give him about a 55 to 45 chance of reelection.)
Let's make no mistake about it, however. This episode has hurt Obama. It comes on the heels of his anti-American apology campaign, his rather feckless manner of handling health care and his dithering on whether to send more troops to Afghanistan. In other words, it adds to the damage done to the aura that surrounded him on inauguration day. He was practically walking on water then. Now it is becoming more and more clear that Barack Hussein Obama is just a very, very slick Chicago pol who is pretty much out of his depth at heading the world's only true superpower.
Had the Prez come home having turned the trick in Copenhagen, he would have won back a bit of the mojo that he has lost over the past several months. Now his decline continues. This latest miscalculation (would he have gone to Copenhagen without feeling certain that he would succeed?) is not huge but it is nevertheless a half step backward. The problem is, Obama needs some successes right now.
Copenhagen was not a success.
