Maybe Im just an eternal optomist but I take a LOT of positive out of this game. We were 1-9 on UNCONTESTED 3s; and 14-33 on fts. Those are outcomes that are controlled solely by our shooting (well, and the wind). Set those averages at what we were last season and guess what; thats 14 points!
I'm not making excuses, Cuse was the better team today on the boat. But come February and March we will be a contender and probably in line for a 3 seed.
We know what we have in Tapley and Franklin. Stephens looks improved and O'Brien looks GREAT. I think Rahon will be closer to where he was two years ago than last year. This team is as good as we thought.

This game pretty much proved what we already knew:
1) Syracuse is a better team 2) We are Sweet 16 caliber, not Final Four caliber 3) Jamaal can be GREAT if he ever gets his head screwed on right, but it's questionable if that will happen. NBA scouts watching today's game can't possibly see Jamaal as a lottery pick. 4) Not concerned (yet) about the poor shooting, let's play indoors before we worry. 5) It's simply not enough to be more athletic than MW/BW teams if we want to build a national brand. We need to recruit legitimate 4s and 5s to play against the big boys of college basketball. 6) The guys played hard, but just didn't play smart at times. 7) James Johnson was not a rugged, low-post player at Virginia. He was more of a face-up four. Not sure he is what we really need.

...we only lost by 13 when we shot 17 - 63 from the field (27%), 1 - 18 from three (5.6%) and best of all 14 - 33 (42.4%) from the free throw line... You can't shoot much worse than that! We shot Thirty three free throws! Really, that is a way to defeat a big team like Syracuse. I also like how JJ played. Totally agree. Everyone should know we wouldn't miss that badly shooting treys indoors. That played into Syracuse's hand and the team had to play their game, not ours. If there's one thing Fisher needs to address it's shooting FTs. The wind didn't seem to affect the Orange as much as the Aztecs. We can't afford to play games where the team shoots 50% or less at the line. The staff needs to have drills on how to shoot them, especially the younger guys. Confidence at the line results in confidence in floor play. The guys were pressing today because points came too hard.

Yeah, I thought Shepard looked comfortable on the court even though his stats don't look too hot. Esp. against a team the caliber of Syracuse. Jamaal will be fine. I hope Thames will be fine. It would be great to have Rahon play like we expected him to his senior year. Shepard looks out of control to me. He needs to stop those one handed forced passes. He is trying to be too flashy and ended up with four turnovers (no assists) in 21 minutes of play. Until he can play more under control, get an outside shot and make some free throws, I'm not quite as high on Winston as many of you are. He did get four offensive rebounds, seven total. The rebounds are important and the kid has great court vision....yes, he needs to reel in the razzle dazzle a bit but I think coach Fish has a great track record of doing just that with young players over the years...By the end of the year I think this kid is going to be a major contributor for us.

wow...that is pretty damn ugly when you look at it on paper....pretty telling when the 3 guys who take the most shots go 3-13, 3-12 and 1-11.

As would be expected, lots of the sky is falling stuff on this board...
However, like I mentioned a few weeks back, Kerr told me he would not want to have to play a game out there and that Syracuse was probably the worst opponent you could play in that environment.
That said, after the initial run Syracuse made I think the Aztecs played them fairly even. They clearly have some talented guys and were definitely the better team today but the Aztecs have some talented guys too and will be pretty good this year. They didn't quit and fortunately they still believe in themselves.
Good game to play because of the exposure regardless of the outcome.

The bright side is we were down 17-4 very early, and even though it didn't seem like it, we played Syracuse even for the rest of the game (13 point loss).
Right before tipoff, Syracuse shot around for 5-10 minutes. The Aztecs came out very late and did not shoot around at all. Not sure if that contributed to the slow start or not.

We won the second half. You could say Syracuse didn't play as hard in the second half but we still won it. I saw a lot of things to improve on but a lot of positives as well.

Yep, most people realize how much mother nature impacted this game. It is really hard to judge the future performance under those conditions. I think we will be just fine.

Yeah I guess I was thrown off by the 'i never want to play in a game like this again' thread, the two 'problems with JF' threads, and the 'was he out coached?' thread. My bad. Sorry

For as sloppy and out of control as we played, we make 80% of our free throws and we probably win. A lot closer than it seemed.

JJ was our best player and will be very important this year; seems like a glue type guy. Does a lot of good stuff.
Tapley showed his high BB IQ on a day when his shot was not in evidence.
Shepard had too many TO's for me, but liked the rebounding.
JF's ego effectively neutralized him.
Gotta wonder when we will see more from Polee and what it will be. A CA POY must have a lot more to offer than what we've seen. Am wondering what is up. Best contribution, so far, was halftime advice to the coaches in an exhibition game.

Also appreciate that Rahon is back in form and ready for a healthy senior year. Love his ability to take it to the hole. Makes him much more valuable, not a guy that a defense can sleep on!

If a team could have made 80% of their free throws in those conditions, the Aztecs wouldn't have been fouled enough to get 33 attempts. Not fouling would have changed other things like our shooting percentage inside. When you don't care if you foul that extra agressiveness allows you to steal and block more than you otherwise would.
