First, we need to burn coal here at home. That means remove arbitrary rules within reason. Burn clean coal as part of our overall energy policy. Second, explain just why it would be a subsidy. They get big bucks for the leases and our government could either try to get more with the result being that the miners go to private land just as has happened in Dakota and Montana on oil. Funny, griping about cheap coal for China and other spots and not using that cheap coal here at home. Worried about pollution? In the big global picture, does it really matter much in the long run where the coal is burnt? If the answer is yes, don't you think that burning clean coal at home is better than smoking away in China.

Why are you willing to subsidize chinese companys with our tax dollars? Have you thought this through?

Why spend the money to convert to gas when coal fired plants are in place?

Again, explain the subsidy. Why spend the money to convert to gas when coal fired plants are in place? You did not read the article did you? Of course I read the article. Just how long will this price differential in gas vs coal cost last? Just because we have incompetents in government and the Dept of Interior does not mean that business should ignore any advantage. The tax payers are getting what they demand of their government and if they don't mind giving exporters an advantage then that is who you blame. It is all in how you look at it. Maybe the people of West Virgina, Ohio and Western Pennsylvania should fire obama and it looks like they are going to. Maybe new leadership will get things back in balance. My original post is still applicable.

I do like free markets and that is why that sooner or later there will be a swing that will make Powder River Coal viable for our nation once again. I am afraid that West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennslyania are never going to recover unless political concerns let the market become rigged.

What you see as a problem is not the fault of China or the people making sound business decisons. Idiots at Dept of Interior could do some good.

If you export coal you do not get to buy at a subsidized price from public land. Even an idiot who worked for the Defense Dept. should be able to figure that out.

OK, obamabot, lets shut those mines down and put those people out of work just because your government is inept.
