That's a great point. Give any halfway decent FBS QB all day to throw and you can make anybody look like Peyton Manning. It sounds as though some here may have forgotten that our DL was a major question even before the season began. They are inexperienced, and not very big so naturally we are going to have problems as we have witnessed in the last two weeks. I still believe that our DL will get better as they play more, and Rocky will most likely change things up some. Rocky will probably be recruiting heavy in the off season for some bigger, faster linemen that we will need especially since we are moving to the BE. I am not so quick to criticize the team. We still have most of the season to go. Ah, but that's the problem isn't it? Rocky HAS been recruiting---and, I assume, heavily---for the past 3 or 4 years---and this is what we've got to show for it. I do NOT want Rocky anywhere near recruits. If for some unknown, scandalous reason Rocky must remain, then get someone in who knows how to bring excitement and hope to the players about the program. So far he is less than inspiring on ANY front.

Dan Kottman has now been moved up the depth chart to the second team tackle. Per Rocky: "Right now he's our second-best nose guard. Whether he's earned it or not, he's getting it by default ... When we gave him a chance he played better than the other guys except for Sam." "He's got some quickness to him. Sometimes quickness helps with pass rush. Right now he's too little, and they're grabbing him and throwing him around." This is the sad state of our D-Line. Huge blunder in recruiting when a 245 pound true freshman is your second best player at the defensive tackle position. sandiegostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1414267

So here's the depth behind Meredith. A guy who weighs just 245, or less than our DEs, a converted TE and a guy who played DE in HS. For a team about to move up to the BE, that's just awful so we damn well better be looking to bring in some JUCO guys for 2013.

I think what he means is that they do/did not want to play him this year. He needs a redshirt year to develop. He was the best of the other guys. Just like when you didn't want want to hook up with that fat chick last weekend, but she was the only chick who was talking to you at last call. You hooked up with her by default. Kottman was the hottest fat chick.

I guess he means that Kottman is better than the worst? We have a hand full of 265 lbs - 275 lbs DL on the roster. They should be sufficient if shooting the gaps is the goal. HOWEVER, having a 290 lbs - 300 lbs NG (that is mobile) would make a big difference. My issue is with the experienced and deep LBs. Where are they? I can't watch many of the games, so does someone have input about the schemes, or lack of?

Rocky's comments were to me an obvious attempt to try to fire up guys who play a position in which sufficient want-to can overcome modest skills and make a decent player. Maybe they just aren't very strong but if they aren't, they're an aberration since everywhere else this team looks plenty physical.

Trying to fire up Trujillo maybe. Most of the DL are FR and Soph. A JR transfer would have been the way to go This season I think. Beed and some of the other young players have got to step up when they get the playing time.

We've had no injuries in that area so one would expect improvement as the season progresses. Instead, there has been considerable regression the last two games. And as another poster pointed out, do you notice ANY stunting by the linemen? I haven't. Also, our pass rushing doesn't just come from the linemen. We blitz one and sometimes two LBs on every passing down yet despite those guys being returning players, THEY aren't pressuring the QB either. If you think I'm wrong about any of that, let's debate the point. Imagine, our 250 lb dlinemen mostly bullrushing 300+ lb olinemen, what a joke. Doesn't this Osia Lewis know any other techniques? I seriously question whether Rocky's defensive staff has the patience to coach up underclassmen. That could explain the high number of game substitutions than normal. Rocky constantly harping about not having enough seniors is getting old. It's not a perfect world, deal with it.

The high number of DL substitutions was intended to keep the guys fresh with more energy to rush the QB. I really believe in this strategy. The only problem was the fresh guys kept on bullrushing the big, slow opponent OL. The need to run some stunts with these small guys. It's pretty much a gimmick within a gimmich defense.

I'm bringing this thread back because it's now more relevant than ever.
Fresno State threw the ball 56 times. San Diego State had 0 sacks.
That has to be a SDSU record for pass rush futility. Probably destroyed the old one in fact.
