Reviewing the injured list
Posted by Bob Condotta
The daily grind of training camp can bring with a dizzying array of quotes, notes and other stuff, and it's easy for some things to get lost in the shuffle.
So with UW now going into hiding for a few days --- they are practicing today through Saturday before taking Sunday off, though none of those are open to the media --- I thought it might be a good time to review the injuries so far. And specifically, those that might impact a player's availability for games. Again, this is through Wednesday's practice:
RB Deontae Cooper --- Knee injury, out for the season.
LB Nate Fellner --- Broken bone in foot suffered Aug. 9, out four weeks, so roughly two weeks more or so from now.
LB Jamaal Kearse --- Stress fracture in lower leg suffered last week, out 4-6 weeks.
WR James Johnson --- Dislocated wrist suffered last week, out 4-6 weeks.
DE Hau'oli Jamora --- Knee, out indefinitely.
As of Wednesday, those were the only players who appeared in danger of missing games this season. Based on the estimates we've been given, Fellner should be back by the Stanford game, which is the Pac-12 opener on Sept,. 27 at the latest, and it sounds like Kearse and Johnson could be back by then, as well. Cooper is out. Jamora's status is uncertain as he was still awaiting arthroscopic surgery as of Wednesday.
A number of other players have been sidelined throughout camp with varying injuries but as of Wednesday, all appeared on track to be able to go for the opener.
Also worth noting that WR Kevin Smith has been wearing a no-contact yellow jersey throughout camp as he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered prior to the Alamo Bowl. But he has seen increasing time in team drills in practice of late and seems on track to return to full participation soon.
