No way in hell he gets away with that dunk in a live D1 game as much as he did in that no defense drew league. I'm sure he'll try it against some of the "lesser" competition this year, though.

Off the backboard or between the legs dunks during actual college basketball games is not something to be done. It is 100% showboating and I hope Jamaal does not let himself do it this season. A reverse dunk can be done for a reason because it provides the player with another angle to the hoop. Jamaal had an awesome impromptu reverse slam putback last season and it was totally within flow of the game.
Alley oops, high flying fast break tomahawks, reverse slams have all been accepted as part of the game. Yet, tossing it off backboard is showing up opponent as well as personal showboating, same as through the legs (which has the additional drawback of making a sure thing fast break dunk into a shot with some risk).
I expect Jamaal to be a leader this year and to have the maturity to know better than to perform such dunks during games that count.

I've seen players throw the ball off the backboard to gain an advantage by getting the defense off balance and out of the way of the scoring lane, then simply lay the ball up. The player has to be highly skilled and the timing has to be impeccable. Here are some examples:

BBA, come on man, you're stretching it now.
You say, you seen "players" do it, yet all those videos are of Bryant, hahaha. Even Kimba was quoted as saying he saw Kobe do it so he decided to give it a shot.
And none of those were dunks, which is what Jamaal will try first.

We all remember this guy: Yes, BBA, you are right, a pass off the backboard can be used as a move to evade a defender and then make a play. Especially if a player is somewhat trapped by defender or it is late in the clock. however, the plays I have seen Jamaal make involve fast breaks where he had no defender to beat but simply tossed it to himself for showtime. One time, if I recall, he tried to make a pass to himself in traffic and perhaps he was trying for one of the Kobe/Kemba moves displayed in your videos. Unfortunately, it resulted in a turnover and it was early in the clock, thus a coach would have expected him to work harder to pass the ball to a teammate and work for a better shot. Best not to use the move unless in a pickle and it is a way out, or when the pass off the board will lead to a rebound in an open space where a high percentage shot or layup can then follow.

I agree with everyone. I think Jamaal will find that confortable medium where he chooses the correct moments to pull off such plays, but he's not throwing that move out. Imagine a close game in a packed Viejas arena, and Jamaal goes off the backboard!
