It was between us and Memphis. No way was he going to New Mexico or New Mexico State. Glad he's an Aztec.

Sergio Phillips @theycallmeserg I will be playing at the University of San Diego State go #aztecs !!! Retweeted by SD Football Network
We're so excited to have you Serg, that we're overlooking the error in SDSU's name. Chances are, you were excited too, hence the error.
Welcome! We look forward to seeing you rock the red n' black!

A big boy at 6'3" 300 pounds, and he's only 17. He's gonna love San Diego. He sure racks up the pancakes. Last year he blocked for one of the best running backs in the country Dontre Wilson, who is off to Oregon. espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7940231

Yep, another DFW stud that went under the radar because of his height, a la Dan Kottman. Reminds me of LeCharles Bentley.

Now this is what you want to see when reading a scouting report on a offensive guard.
Phillips is a tough run blocker with the explosion and playing strength needed to win the one on one battles; has the size and athleticism for the offensive guard position at the major level of competition; a growth spurt would allow for additional body mass over time. His three point stance appears a little awkward but we like his flexibility, balance and agility; can play on his feet in space while demonstrating tight box mobility; is effective adjusting his feet when attempting to handle quick change of direction movement. This lineman comes off the ball aggressively with a flat back and good blocking base; rolls the hips quickly while showing the explosive pop and surge needed to knock defenders off the ball; is able to gain and sustain an immediate advantage with his persistent leg drive and balance. Does a very efficient job pulling and locating defenders on the move; can adjust his blocking angle with crushing results. Possesses the athleticism needed to reach for leverage and is consistently able to get a hat on active 1st and 2nd level defenders; mobility and playing strength should allow him to make all the run blocks at the next level. His arm length, quick hands and nimble feet will be assets in pass protection; sets quickly demonstrating good bend and slide; is effective handling double read assignments to the edge without crossing his feet. Flashes good punch and location however refinement is necessary. This guy is a tough customer who finishes with the nasty, punishing attitude we look for when evaluating offensive linemen. Phillips may need some time and perhaps a red shirt year prior to competing for starting time at the next level of competition.

So SDSU now has an offensive lineman from Texas (Phillips) to add to the one from Arizona (Antonio Rosales) and Florida (Braxton Isaac went to HS in Florida, JC in CA) this recruiting perioid. Very well could add Kentucky to the group if Bloomfield enjoyed enough his SDSU visit

Keep the road graders coming. Having the horses to compete at the LOS is critical to being a successful program.

His coach lamenting the fact that he's shocked he doesn't have more offers and his opinion that his height is the reason.

ESPN has him as number 76 guard and three stars for what thats worth. H eis about 6'1 300 and actually for a guard that isgreat with his feet and power . From what acouple of the coaches tell me in Texas he is a devestating run blacker with an Embernasty temperment.. Tremendous leverage and footwork. I can see Stamps running behind him,and Siragusa.

Are there any good nose guards like this guy out there on our radar. ? We need a Hayward type guy.

Film looks pretty good. Has a nice initial punch and looks powerful with decent feet. The height is a bit of a worry. 6'1, 300 is much different from 6'3, 300. I really hope he is closer to 6'3. You don't see many high major O-Lineman at 6'1.

If he's playing C or G height won't matter for him as his coach said he has long arms. In fact being a little bit shorter, but having long arms, can be advantageous.
