Thanks, guys, for loading me up with the image of Rebecca in Risky Business. I'll be smiling the rest of the day over that one.
I realize I'm still using the John Marinatto model of BE expansion, and it may no longer apply with Marinatto gone. But the BE has been seeking destination ciites for its recent additions. Places right for bowl week, places opposing teams, fans and media would find exciting enough to pack a suitcase for. Locations that allow TV people to go in and out of commercials with glossy glamour shots of nearby locales (think The Strip at dusk).
Fresno State has none of that. It has earned some respect for overachieving in football despite the limitations of its market and the fiscal troubles of California. It has better-than-average facilities (though I'm not sure I'd include Bulldog Stadium on that list). But it's surrounded by Fresno, a punchline of a town.
When we were added to the BE last year many fans of the league wanted to know why. So what do you think they would say to Fresno? It's true SDSU specifically might benefit because of the close geography, but the BE as a whole just has no economic or cultural incentive that I can see to welcome Fresno State to the conference. I really don't see it happening.

MontezumaPhil, Fresno State opens up central and northern california for the BE. that alone should be enough of an incentive. Since their other sports would most likely go to the BW/PCAA it will also seal the deal with Boise getting accepted as well.
so if not Fresno, then who? nmsu, unlv?? there are not a lot of options this side of the mississippi.
maybe the BE really is content with just two western fb-only teams. i just can't see it though

When we were added to the BE last year many fans of the league wanted to know why. So what do you think they would say to Fresno? There is only one regular on the BE board who is adamantly opposed to Fresno and he's a UCF fan who has probably never been to California in his life and who keeps thinking BYU will join despite the fact there isn't any reason for the Borg to do so as long as they can continue to fill out their football schedule. A few other posters oppose Fresno but their reasons are as legit as believing the 14th football member should be UMass or Villanova. Or maybe the University of New Hampshire or Rhode Island. Or maybe Maine. Does Maine play football? Is there even a University of Maine? Doesn't matter. If it's in the Northeast, it's gotta be good to those guys. (Maybe the University of Prince Edward Island.) In general the philosophy on the BE board is that BYU would be the best choice, followed by AFA and then Fresno.

They play football in the CAA

The MWC is going to be the next Metro Conference.
The Metro was created in 1975 as an Olympics only conference with these members: GA Tech, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, Tulane and Saint Louis. A year later Florida State joined. Two years later, VA Tech joined with Saint Louis leaving.
Pretty good conference, huh? Problem is, that lasted for just four years. Then GA Tech left for the ACC. Although GA Tech was immediately replaced by South Carolina, in 1991, South Carolina joined the SEC and FSU joined the ACC. Just three years later the conference fell apart, with VA Tech, Cincy and Louisville joining the new Big East and Memphis and Tulane joining the new CUSA.
This month, the MWC had its thirteenth birthday. It may survive another six years to reach 19 like the Metro but I'm not sure. I think UNLV or UNM could be the next Saint Louis by just dropping football. The other could be the next Tulane, a permanent member of some new conference which merges SJSU, USU and Nevada and a few current Big Sky schools that move up to FBS but like the SBC now, has no national TV contract. The three front range schools will collectively be Memphis. They'll join CUSA, which has managed to keep UTEP from jumping to the MWC and has trumped the MWC by adding UTSA and North Texas and is poised to also add Texas State, thereby giving it five Texas schools (including Rice) even though Houston and SMU left.
The writing is on the wall and we got out while the getting was good and Fresno is going to get out just in the nick of time.

Bring on Fresno State to the BE in Football and BW in Basketball & Oly sports. They have been nationally ranked in both major sports in their past and have had a great baseball team. I see them as having the most potential for following us. As we have discussed before, Fresno State has the whole central valley cheering for them so the TV market goes way beyond Fresno.

Unless Fresno changes it's name, I just don't see any way that the BE will ever include them. I believe that there is such a huge bias against them (inclucing my own) that the memebers will never approve. Everyone within 200 miles of the Atlantic Ocean will not believe that Fresno is anything but a hick farm and ranch town. Often, perception is more important than truth. They will never be considered, UNLESS they turn into a Boise or TCU and sustain it for the next 10 or 12 years.

Greenville, NC has much more panache.

OTOH, there are an AWFUL lot of TV sets in the CA Central Valley... and Fresno State is arguably more powerful in that market than SDSU is in San Diego's media market.

Since when is Calhoun the do all, end all on the decision? I heard somewhere that the retiring AD was the one who did NOT want togo BE, but that it could change. Are we sure Calhoun's comment is an official turndown? Those come fromthe university, not the coach.

Are we sure Calhoun's comment is an official turndown? Those come fromthe university, not the coach. About a year ago, their AD said during a presser that AFA was as good as gone to the BE for football. He had it all figured out. He had supposedly contacted the Mizzou Valley Conference and their Olympic sports were good to go there. Problem is that according to an AFA fan on the MWC board, after the commandant or whatever they call him looked at it, he saw how far so many MVC schools are from a major airport and said no way. To their credit, at academies sports teams are manned by true student-athletes who want to make a career of being an officer in the military. So the commandant reportedly put the kibosh on the extent to which being in the MVC would potentially hurt their academics. I don't see that changing and it also appears that AFA is determined to continue to align itself with CSU and Wyoming. FWIW, I can see all three joining CUSA down the road, probably along with UNM as well.

The superintendent pulled the plug last time over the head of the AD, who wanted the move.

Well he is an ex-Falcon player and will have his best chance to win the MWC title after Boise State and SDSU leave. Once that's on his resume my bet is he changes his tune, but then it might be too late. The BE door won't stay open that long.

Rather see the Rebs. UCSB, LBSU, SDSU, BSU, bows and Rebs makes for a damn fine BW. No chance at all that UNLV moves to the BE or even considers it. Our football program is nowhere near where it needs to be, but even with that UNLV would not make this move.

Last we checked neither of you have been invited. LOL.

Air Force is whistling through the graveyard. They cannot possibly be happy in the MWC because it is now such a watered-down version of the halfway decent football league it used to be. It isn’t just about minimizing travel expenses with AFA, since they will always get their bills paid. The academies are proud. They want to play at the most prestigious level they can handle. The MWC will never be called prestigious. So the guess here is that AFA has been quietly trying to find a landing spot for its non-football teams before reaching out to the BE, but can’t come up with one. And they didn’t want to do what BSU did. Another year and the AFA situation could change completely. The Vegas paper is reporting that the new stadium plans for UNLV are farther along than they’ve ever been. If so, then nevermind how miserable Rebel football is. If and when the stadium is a done deal, UNLV figures to get a quick invite to the BE. Jeesch! And you don't think that's the future of the BE?!? Hell, talking about inviting MW schools, just expand the MW with the BE to national level now. Nothing left but strength in numbers to survive, that's all it is at this stage. And UNLV don't need no stinking BE, if the numbers are accurate, joining the BE, SDSU will still have a smaller athletic budget than UNLV. And I do continue to admire AFA's refusal to get caught up in the money grab, including the pathetic amount awaiting the Aztecs and that punchline in Boise.

No chance at all that UNLV moves to the BE or even has a chance to consider it. FIFY I really hope you guys become a permanent conference partner with us. However, I've given up hope it will happen. Football has never mattered at UNLV and I see 100%, absolute, zero evidence it ever will. Some of your fans think you're the Memphis of the western U.S. Sorry, but you're not. Memphis football is a roller coaster but it's occasionally pretty good. To put it another way, it's SDSU that's the Memphis of the western U.S. UNLV is more like the Duke of the western U.S. Duke lucked out and got in the ACC a long time ago. UNLV isn't so lucky so I'd say if you don't get that state-of-the-art stadium built, the survival of your football team (I almost said program but it's not a program) is about 50-50 going forward.

This post is so totally lacking in objectivity about SDSU that it couldn't possibly have been written about anybody who actually wants to see SDSU sports succeed. Seriously, my man. Just leave. That will be better for us and better for you.

They can't afford to put money into their football program. That proposed stadium is a pipe dream until they dig that ceremonial shovel. They're putting their money into their BB program. Why not? MWC football is going to be inferior to the C-DOA anyway. Do you even know why AFA is happy to remain right where they are? You forgot that the Big 12 actually invited them and they refused on the basis that their pathetic oly sports couldn't compete. So it wasn't about money, it was more about protecting their oly sports from being embarrassed. I hope you stop following Aztec sports for the good of everyone's sanity here. It's kinda stupid to follow a school expecting to gloat, "There, I told you so." Sorry for having to say that, but I've read one too many of your posts.

It will be tough to match thier budget since they get 30M from the state - yeah thats the financial model we should follow. Thanks for playing - now please go away
