I used to be really annoyed with Michael Kinsley. He was clearly on the Left (though not radically so) and always seemed to have a silly smirk on his face. (How's that for a pathetic ad hominem attack?! My face is red and I plead guilty.) Lately, though, he seems to be writing much more sensible pieces. I suppose that if I find him more sensible, he will lose prestige with some folks. Seriously, this piece is an interesting look at the debate over outsourcing. Kinsley explains why losing jobs to another country has positive counterparts that should not be, but usually is, ignored. It's a hard sell because the victims are concentrated and easy to identify, while the benefit [i.e., trade coming the other way] is diffused through the whole economy.He takes shots at both Romney and Obama, but more so at the President, as in these quotes. . .
Obama apparently intends to skewer Romney as a businessman. His campaign carefully conflates being a businessman with being a crooked businessman,
One of Obama's flaws is that he seems to feel he can't criticize any current arrangement without vilifying the people involved,
Obama proposes a heavy dinner of grants, subsidies and tax credits to discourage outsourcing and encourage "insourcing" — bringing jobs from abroad back to America — all of which are bad ideas. That quote in the previous paragraph [which was an attack on China] is from Obama, and it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how markets work. Based upon the title of the article, I thought that he was going to talk about the benefits of outsourcing. He didn't.
As one who is in a profession that has been hit hard by both outsourcing and insourcing, I'll tell you that there is nothing good about it. At least as the American worker is concerned. It is a short term solution to producing profits that has a long term effect on America and the working American.
I'll even go as far as to say it is against our long term national interest and could deeply effect us in times of crisis, specifically armed conflict.

GE outsourced to China. GE is an osamatax supporter.
Small businesses who create 70% cannot outsource. Small businesses are under a huge attack by the current Prezident who is paying back his emabarrassment with Joe the Plumber.
It is stupid to discuss "outsourcing" when every small business in America is under seige by the Tzars and direct aim and attack from your Prezident.

It is hard to make much of a case for anyone if protecting jobs is the issue. If you put stable policies in place where domestic companies can plan for growth, more jobs would stay here in the US. When you you use Stimulus money to promote "green jobs" and where the material for those green jobs comes from overseas you are heading the wrong direction.

It's a double-edged sword. We like low prices. We can't have them if 2 cent a day workers aren't producing that garbage.
So as Americans, we might all need to take a stand and stop buying stuff like American flags made in Tawain.

The national debt is $16 trillon and $7 trillion is on osamatax's watch. Most of the debt is owed to the chinese. No business can be blamed for this. Only the current Prezident, mostly, and his democRat and republiCan preds.
So this is a campaign by the dems. to not talk about the big and real issues.

Don't forget it was the cheezy, New Yawk Times writer who wrote that stupid book, "The World is Flat." He and his buddy Gal Gore, pushed for outsourcing in the democRatic party. We all had to call in to India to fix our computers, remember? We all were commanded to outsource by the democRatic party so that Friedman could sell his book and money riches!

From all sides, workers, corporations and the gov. I find it hard to really argue with you on that other than I could make a weak case defending corporations. They can not last long building $2 gadgits in a $1 market and must go where they can manufacture and turn a profit. |
