What did you hear on the rooftops in the Wanchai district of Hong Kong?
Actually nothing there. I'm trying to remember. Everytime we went to Hong Kong 1968 - 1973 we pulled into the dangerous harbor and had to ride long ride liberty launches. I think we landed at a place called Fenwick Pier and diagonally across from it was a British Club that had cheap beer. That was as far as I got on my first day's liberty (I was still a teenager.) I tasted about eight different types of beer and went back to the ship to sleep it off. The next day I took photos of Victoria Island and lots of other spots in the colony. On the third day I visited the border and chanted along with the Red Guards on the other side of the border. I think I was chanting obscenities that corresponded to the red book wavers chants. That was fun as I had to improvise with every new chant. Life was fun because I was just a punk kid, acting silly.
The last time I was there in '73 Just a few months before I started college, I spent a lot of time in stores buying crap that I did not need, but bought it because it was so inexpensive. I even bought two silk suits ($20 each) from a tailor who hounded me and then six shirts (nice quality and fabric for only two dollars each. I used those suits for thirty years and two of my sons wore them to big school dances in the last few years. They still look like new after all these years.
That is not what I was after, but you remind me of something that I bought in Hong Kong more than 50 years ago that still look and wear great. I bought a pair of tailor-made loafers in a shop there for about eight bucks and I still wear them. All the suits and sport coats are long gone. The days of a loose comfortable fitting 30 inch waistband are distant memories.
