While looking up facts about Kelsey Sokoloski (he lettered in baskeball in h.s.. . . maybe Fish will want to recruit him!) I took a look at the recruiting class of 2006, the first under Chuck Long. Keep in mind that Long did not have much time to cultivate a full-blown recruiting class that year.
Anyway, here is the list; those still with the team are 5th year seniors. Names with Xs are no longer on the team. We know that Fehoko quit when he lost his starting O-line job (poor baby!) and that Soko decided to switch to baseball. How about the others? I doubt many graduated after only four years.
Bottom line: of the 18 recruits in 2006, only 8 are still with the team. That's a stupendously high rate of attrition. One hopes Hoke's recruits will do better.

This is another reason I think we should go with some more jucos than normal next year. We just don't have the numbers in the senior class.

Not much time to recruit that season for Long and some of those recruits were actually Crafts recruits that Long inherited. (Doesn't mean they were bad, but they weren't all Longs)

I screwed up. (No cheers, please!). These 2006 recruits would not be in their fifth year, but in their fourth, right? 2006, 7, 8, and now 2009. Anyway, that may be even worse, since there has been less time elapse since these players' first season. Still a lot of attrition.
Has anybody done research into when the greatest attrition of recruits takes place? I would guess after the second year, since most players will stick it out as freshmen. If, after their redshirt freshman season they see no chance of playing, that would be the time to leave.
And, of course, academic problems can arise anytime. Well, they could arise at schools where you actually have to go to class! ;D
