When the Padres let Doug Brocail become a free agent instead of signing him, they received the #42 pick in the 2008 draft. They picked Jaff Decker.
Jaff (pronounced Jeff) signed quickly and put up some good numbers in the Arizona instructional league:
2008 AZL .352 .523 .541 1.064
In 2009, at 19 years old, he moved to Fort Wayne and didn't miss a beat:
2009 "A-".299 .442 .514
This year at Lake Elsinore, while 20 years old, Jaff started slow but has improved over time and is now on fire.
2010 "A+" Pre-All Star: .195 .256 .319 2010 "A+" Post-All Star: .305 .439 .616 2010 "A+" August: .360 .492 .860 2010 Last 6 Games: .474 .630 1.263 (5 HR)
20 years old is very young for "A+". Jaff is a star in the making.
For comparison Buster Posey was in "A+" at 22 years old and hit: .326 .428 .540 with 13 home runs. Jaff has 17 home runs. 2 years development is huge at that age. Jaff won't be 21 until 2/23 2011. He could well be in the starting outfield for the Padres in 2012 and a future hitting star.

You might want to add Bill that Jaff is out for the year with a broken hand right now.

Nah, you don't need a right hand to play baseball, just for when he's super bored.

You might want to add Bill that Jaff is out for the year with a broken hand right now. Damm. I didn't notice his last game was on Aug 18. That sucks. He was really smoking before that. Do you think he will open in "AA" next year? Coming off a broken hand, and just turning 21, maybe they will have him start in "A+".

His placement will depend on two factors, primarily. Is the club satisfied with this recent hitting tear that he was on as proof that he can handle the jump and who else does the organization want to promote due to age/performance/other factors. Just a guess, but I expect him to be back at Elsinore for a month or six weeks and then quickly promoted.

He is going to start at SA, LE is no challenge for him or any half way decent hitter

He is going to start at SA, LE is no challenge for him or any half way decent hitter LE would be a great challenge for Adrian Gonzalez, when he was 12. AGon has always been much more than a "half way decent hitter". Jaff is only 20 - you can't ignore age when talking about prospects,.

Maybe you can explain how LE led the California league in ERA with a team ERA of 3.65 ?

the biggest thing holding him back is his weight... Do you mean the wait for his hand to heal He wouldn't be the first player who had a few extra pounds. "I'm not an athlete, mamm, I'm a ball player". But hopefully he gets fit and rips it up next year.

Absolutely incorrect. Elsinore is right about neutral. The only true hitter havens are the ballparks in Modesto, Lancaster and High Desert.
