We tend to only focus on the Giants. That is normal since that is the big race. But to get to the World series, the race for home field advantage is very important and the race to make the playoffs (wild card) is also very important since the Giants could just go insane as we have seen with the Rockies in 2007.
NL West Padres - Giants 5.5 GB
Make the Playoffs - Wild Card (If Giants pass us) Padres - Philadelphia 4.5 GB St. Louis - 5.5 GB
Home Field Advantage Padres - Atlanta 2.0 GB Cincinnati 3.0 GB

Interesting note: The Padres have a better road winning percentage than any other NL team's overall winning percentage. The only other NL team with a winning road record is the Reds. Atlanta, the 2nd best team in the NL is 7 games below .500 on the road. Just looking at the road records, Atlanta would be 9 games behind the Padres. San Diego | 75 | 49 | .605 | Padres Road | 38 | 27 | .585 | Atlanta | 73 | 53 | .579 | Cincinnati | 72 | 54 | .571 | Cincinnati Road | 36 | 28 | .563 | Philadelphia | 70 | 55 | .560 | San Francisco | 71 | 56 | .559 | St. Louis | 68 | 55 | .553 | Colorado | 65 | 60 | .520 | LA Dodgers | 64 | 62 | .508 | NY Mets | 63 | 62 | .504 | Florida | 62 | 62 | .500 | Florida Road | 31 | 31 | .500 | San Francisco Road | 32 | 33 | .492 | Philadelphia Road | 28 | 31 | .475 | Milwaukee | 59 | 66 | .472 | Milwaukee Road | 29 | 33 | .468 | St. Louis Road | 27 | 32 | .458 | Houston | 56 | 69 | .448 | Atlanta Road | 29 | 36 | .446 | Washington | 53 | 73 | .421 | Chicago Cubs | 53 | 74 | .417 | LA Dodgers Road | 25 | 35 | .417 | Chicago Cubs Road | 25 | 36 | .410 | Houston Road | 24 | 36 | .400 | NY Mets Road | 26 | 40 | .394 | Arizona | 49 | 77 | .389 | Colorado Road | 25 | 40 | .385 | Washington Road | 22 | 44 | .333 | Pittsburgh | 42 | 84 | .333 | Arizona Road | 19 | 41 | .317 | Pittsburgh Road | 13 | 48 | .213 |
No team is better on the road but Florida is 31-31 at home and 31-31 on the road.

Magic numbers this early are a little silly but how about a different kind of magic number? Say the number of games an opponent losses or the number of games the Padres play over .500, that would give the Padres the lead if the Padres played .500 the rest of the way.
Semi-Magic Number 04 Dodgers 06 Rockies 09 Giants 12 Braves
So we are 9 Giant losses plus Padres games over .500 from this point (27 over) from only having to play .500 ball to insure the NL West Crown.

If the Padres win 60% of their remaning games (which they have done all year) how many more losses can their opponents indure and still win?
01 Dodgers 03 Rockies 06 Giants 10 Braves
Rockies fans are invoking 2007 as proof that they still have a chance. They better hurry.

The Phillies lost to Houston again. They will come to town with something to prove. Getting swept by Houston at home can't feel good. It moves the Giants 1/2 a game up in the Wild Card. The Phillies are now 7 games behind the Padres (7.5 if we win this afternoon).
The dog days have taken their toll on all the NL leaders except the Padres.
