Told you 3 years back that Rory McIlroy was special. Told you he would kick serious ass and today he withstood a Tiger charge and is now the #1 player in the world. I don't know that anyone will ever be able to match what Tiger has done and will do, given that it appears his game is coming back, but I don't think you can argue anymore that McIlroy is just the new fad.

He's something isn't he? Hey man, given the Irish blood I have...I am a big fan of his!
I never called him just a "new fad", of course. I said his success was relatively new, and we should let his career play out before calling him the next big thing. Remember what happened with Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott after early successes and being christened as potential rivals (though, no majors).
22 years old for McIlroy, already has a major under his belt....impressive. Yes, he technically withstood a Tiger charge but it wasn't exactly them even up or close going into Sunday. Tiger shot a beautiful 62, but was already too much down going in. That's what he gets for not scoring lower Thurs-Sat. Props to McIlroy, despite his underwhelming -1 he had already put himself in great position.
You also have to like how McIlroy didnt let that 80 on Sunday at Augusta last year sink him...evidenced by him destroying the field at the US Open a few months later.

As for the #1, his young age makes it very, very impressive. But hell, there's been four number ones in two years now. Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Luke Donald, and now Rory. Let one of them hold it for a decade like Tiger Woods did, then impress me. ;D

I don't see Westwood or Donald being all that much. I love this because I grew up watching Jack and Arnie going head to head and I love it that I get to see Rory going head to head with Tiger for a while but then going against Kaymer, Fowler or one of the new kids on the block. Rory is not the "new Tiger", he is what he is, but he's more ambitious than I thought he was and I really do think he's going to be one of the best to play the game. =Bob

He is a terrific player. He hits it a ton. As for the other young Euros.....including Kaymer. It'd be nice to see them get a major or two before putting them in the conversation. Fair or not, American golf fans look at Majors results first and foremost when discussing the great ones.

Great to see his will and resolve after choking at Torrey Pines, he bounced back to win Phoenix.

Rory (+2) and Tiger (E) are both playing less than stellar at Doral so far today. Adam Scott and Steve Stricker are currently at -6 and sharing the lead as I type this.
Tiger has won this event four or five times, but it hasn't been on the same course for all of them. I believe it changed locations in Orlando.

Rory seems to have problems playing in windy conditions which is odd considering where he grew up. Links courses are defined by ocean winds. It's just a feeling, but it's always seemed to me that Tiger is not a fan of cool weather, which makes some sense given him growing up in L.A.''It is fun, though, watching the next generation coming up. Some damn good players out there. And BTW, Tiger made an insane shot on a par 5 today. Something like 270 yards, between a couple palm tress, over water and landed it on, or close to, the green. Still doesn't have his putter down but he's closer to his game than he's been in quite some time. =Bob

If Tiger gets hot on the greens again, he is tough to beat.

If Tiger gets hot on the greens again, he is tough to beat. Watson's on fire and he's going to be very difficult to beat. Doral lends itself to long hitters and he's shredding the course. It is interesting, though, how '60s that course is, with its palm trees and arcane bunkers. =Bob

So, Rory wound up in 3rd today. That's 11 out of his last 12 tournaments that he's finished in the top 5 or won. That's why he's #1. I should have known with Watson; what goes through that guy's head I can't explain.
