We all know it was big news when Winston Shepard recently picked SDSU. Perhaps he knows how rock solid and deep next year's team will be? Maybe he wants to win a national championship as a freshman? San Diego is an awesome place to live and the school has a lot to offer. We know he felt connected to Fisher and his style of coaching the players - letting them play their game.
But this is what is mostly on my mind. Next year we have a ton of new high quality fowards eligible to play. There will be a lot of competition for playing time. Many recruits look at that and determine they may be better off going somewhere else - where they can get guaranteed playing time. This in itself tells me that Shepard has alot of confidence in himself.
But Edward Lewis, of ASR, has been saying that 6' 8" forward Shepard is likely to play PG in Fisher's system. Assuming that is what he wants, knowing NBA scouts would be drooling over another Magic Johnson or Jalen Rose type player, he would basically need to play for a team that already has a lot of talent in the forward position. Think about it, if most of your best players are guards, how likely would the coach be the play a 6' 8" point guard? Could it be that the high level of talent in the forward spot actually makes SDSU more attractive to him?
My next question, has anyone here watched Shepard play enough to conclude he can really play PG at the D1 level? I know Dominic Artis mostly played PG for Findlay Prep (Oregon commit).

I'm guessing that his freshmen year Shepard will play at whatever spot gets him on the floor and will be used in more of a hybrid role much like kawhi was. If he stays overtime he may move to the point on a more permanite basis.

Jalen Rose didn't always run point for Meat Chicken. Yeah, I could see Fish using him at the 1, 2 and 3 at different points in time, depending on matchups and other factors. That's what's great about this staff, they figure out ways to best use their personnel for any given moment.

Flexibility with personell is something that will be in great adundance next years, especially when Johnson plays.

Good story by NBC sports on Shepard and SDSU's 2012 class. Summary: ... the fairest comparison to Shepard’s overall game in the college ranks could Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kentucky’s touted freshman forward. Shepard, like Kidd-Gilchrist, lacks a reliable outside shot, but brings tremendous intangibles, and plays to win at all times. Both show defensive prowess that isn’t seen in every elite prospect. They’ve been extremely successful in what was expected to be a down season, and have talent waiting in the wings for next year in the form of two high-major transfer forwards in J.J. O’Brien (Utah) and Dwayne Polee (St. John’s). While Shepard is clearly a gem, the Aztecs previously signed two other excellent prospects from Southern California. Local wing forward Matt Shrigley should be a multi-year starter with his combination of bounce and skill, and many recruiting analysts are scratching their heads regarding the lack of Pac-12 offers to 6-9 center Skylar Spencer, who is expected to be a major factor down the road at San Diego State. Additionally, the Aztecs landed an under-the-radar transfer from Virginia, forward James Johnson, who could benefit with a year to develop following his change of colleges. With the talent that coach Steve Fisher and his staff have amassed, though, it’s easy to image a basketball dynasty in the making near the shores of the Pacific Ocean on San Diego State’s sunny campus beyondthearc.nbcsports.com/2012/02/22/recruiting-rundown-san-diego-st-adds-to-stockpile-with-top-50-senior/
