I was talking to another mid-30's alum the other day when Shepard committed. He commented on how far we've come since the Emerald Eight. For you youngsters, these 8 guys were supposed to be the guys coach Trenkle recruited to take us to the Dance. Only one played out his 4 years here...Myron Epps.
So for fun we tried to name all eight of them. We had issues naming all eight guys. Tried to google it. No dice.
Can you guys help out?

The Legendary Joe Mann ;D I remember Jeffrey Berokoff(sp?) too because he was the jerk scoffing in the background when Fisher said he was going to turn us into a winner at his initial presser. That's the extent of my knowledge.

Epps was a hell of a player considering what he accomplished on some so-so teams.

Walter Small, Jackson Jones, Julien Sormonte, Joe Mann, Myron Epps (Earned honorable mention All-American accolades from Street & Smith magazine in high school), David Abramowitz (Rated the top player in Mexico for the under-18 age group), Vincent Okotie (Athlon top 100), Jeffrey Berokoff (Athlon top 100).
Both Joe Mann and Jeffrey Berokoff didn't feel that they had gotten a fair chance with Fish as coach and left with a bitter taste in their mouths

Epps was a hell of a player considering what he accomplished on some so-so teams. The Emerald Eight in SDSU speak means over hyped meritocracy. Maybe they could have flourished in Fred Trenkle's system, unfortunatly we never got the chance to see it. Trenkle's replacement, Coach Fisher inherited the Emerald Eight and quickly discovered that most of them weren't Div 1 caliber.

The Emerald Eight reminded me, if I can step back even further - to the 70's, of the once hyped Padres' Double Play Combination of the Future, Billy Almon and Mike Champion. Not only did they never pan out, they completely flopped.
Of course the Chargers had overhyped flops like Johnny Rogers and Ryan Leaf. Aztecs football had Tommy Booker, Parade All-American out of Vista High.

Epps was a hell of a player considering what he accomplished on some so-so teams. Notice how in the linked article SDSU emphasized the local kids and paid less attention to Myron, who was vastly better than somebody like Mann, who was definitely not Da Mann.

Mann is by far the worst player to take the court for SDSU in my life as a fan.

Just think, if previous coaches had a hold on this city like Fisher does now, we'd have had a chance for players like Bill Walton, Jud Buechler, Scott Pollard, etc. Instead we get the likes of Courtie Miller and Vince Okotie.

I remember watching Joe Mann awkwardly run down the court, and thinking "This guy is on scholarship?"
