Can someone please explain how AZ which is not even ranked, is able to get 3 of the top ten recruits this year and SDSU cannot even get one in the top 100? That is plain old fashion crazy. Why can't we get top 100 players?

AZ has tradition and some long time roots in with AAU coaches. We are trying to get there we need a couple more years of this then you will see us start to crack a couple of these players annualy. Funny there was an article out a year ago and alot of the coaches hate those rankings, they said the rankings give the kids big heads and some coaches will try to stay away from the top kids.

Because we joined the Big West (grabs popcorn).
But really, a history of NCAA tournament success and recognizable players in the NBA.

It's that damn locker room Arizona has it is really nice. Can we get an Alumni to donate money for a new center like UNLV?

I understand now...it's because we joined the Big West...therefore we no longer get all those 5-star recruits that we used to get... Get real...we NEVER got 5-star recruits so it has NOTHING to do with the Aztecs joining the Big West and EVERYTHING to do with the quality of the program in the past... Steve Fisher & Co. have built and the Aztecs are now, an elite West Coast team and top recruit are starting to figure that out...it's not going to take much longer before top recruits will start bypassing schools with historically better programs and start heading to San Diego State. It won't matter to an elite recruit as to what conference the team plays in...they are only interested in 4 things: 1) How much playing time will they get 2) Will the coaching staff make them a better player 3) Is the program good enough to complete in the big dance come March (i.e. other member of the team) 4) Can they use the program to get themselves to the next level There are plenty of basketball programs in "lesser" conferences who attract top notch talent (think Butler, Temple, Xavier, Gonzaga, Memphis, BYU, UNLV, Nevada, and yes...SDSU). Stop whining about the Big West and think more about the home and home games with members of the Big East and major early-season touraments (like the Maui Classic, Great Alaskan Shootout or Diamond Head Classic - coming in 2012) as well as the TV exposure from the conference affiliation with ESPN. We've got a great program thanks to great recruiting, coaching, facilities, and fan support. Stop being so negative and appreciate where we were and where we're at... It'll all play out for the good if we just contiue to win... Aztec for Life

It's all about the coach/recruiter.
It has less to do with their history, and everything to do with their current coach ... who is probably the best recruiter in college basketball right now.
But if Miller took the Maryland job ... they would have a top 3 recruiting class every year and arizona would fall back to middle of the pac-12 again.
Kentucky's history didn't change when Calapari arrived ... but there recruits sure as hell did.

Coaches do matter, but if you think facilities and history has nothing to do with it you are kidding yourself. Miller wasn't landing these kind of players at Xavier even with his great rep, that had mostly to do because while Xavier is known as a top 50 bball school it isn't near the elites.

Really hope we meet each other in the Diamond Head Classic finals next season... should be a great matchup and an epic game.
As to this thread, seriously?? We are light years away from the name/brand/notariety/program that Arizona is. 15 Sweet Sixteens, 9 Elite Eights, 4 Final Fours and a National Championship.
Although at this point, I genuinely only see Arizona and UCLA as real recruiting threats to us when it comes to Pac-12 programs. Both have storied programs that sell themselves.

Washington has a great rep in cali AAU ball, Romar is known as a terrific recruiter, I wouldn't be surprised if he pulls off the trifecta of Domingo, Gordan, and Bird.

We are only slotted to "potentially" play them in Hawaii next year. We dont get the return game from our home and away until the 2013-14 season. I think we will smack them in the Diamond Head thanks to our veteren team, but the following season AZ will (should) be a top 10 team, but at least that game will be in our building. But we should also be very good and potentially top 10 the following year as well.

I agree, Washington has a great program, and Oregon has been recruiting really well as of late, too. CAL has always been strong as well. I just see us as being able to compete with the same level of recruits as those guys now... Arizona is still the premiere destination in the West, at least according to Scout/Rivals/and ESPN recruit rankings.
